Are flowers THAT important?

Diana, on August 8, 2012 at 4:47 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 24

I refuse to spend thousands of dollars on flowers! Ive shopped around for wholesellers and am definitely going that route. To ensure my flowers still look beautiful on wedding day I'm going toward sturdier flowers like babys breath and carnations. I know they're "making a come back" but I can't shake the feeling that everyone will think my flower arrangements are "cheap".

I guess I just want someone to tell me in the end the flowers aren't what's important anyway!

We're already a couple thousand over budget and I seriously have to keep myself in check!

I'm not having real flowers at all! I don't think it's worth spending that much money on something that will die. Are they pretty, sure, but to me it's a waste of money.

Nobody is going to tell you that your arrangements are cheap!

You could always pay for a nice bouquet from a florist for yourself and have every one else just carry a single flower.

I didn't even do floral centerpieces. I just used the hall's free ones.

Nothing is THAT important, except you, fh, a marriage license, someone who can legally marry you, and in some spots, a couple of witnesses. Seriously! Don't spend money on something that is not important to you. My flowers were under $400, and I couldn't imagine spending more than that.

As long as they are arranged well, carnations will not look cheap. Have you considered non-floral centerpieces? Candles, stones, things like that are very inexpensive (Dollar Store!)

Edit to add - NOTHING is important except you, FH, the marriage license and an officiant! Everything else is extra.

I love the look of a single flower! Hadn't even thought of that.

I'm using mason jars as centerpieces so basically it works as a vase and I just need to place the flowers inside. Voila!

I'm not using flowers at all. I'm making Christmas ornament bouquets for me and my girls. My centerpieces will double as a guest book and be Christmas ornaments as well. Ornaments won't die and can immediately become decor. Smiley smile

P.S. - We created a December WW Brides FB group if you'd like to join. We have pictures of our different crafts and just talk about things particular to December (timing of invites, what we have done, etc.) PM me if you'd like the link to join!

That's what i thought at first, too. I ended up finding a florist that actually worked with our budget! (i, too, refused to spend more than $1000 on flowers....)

    We are getting:

    my bouquet

    1 MOH bouquet

    4 BM bouquets

    3 "mothers" corsages

    2 corsages for the grandmothers

    2 "dads" bouts

    1 bout for my grandfather

    5 bouts (FH and groomsman)

    12 Centerpieces

1 hairpiece (for the reception- white gerbera with black center, and a couple of small whispy feathers! i can't wait!)

Some of the flower she will be using are: orchids, hydrangeas, gerberas, and... other stuff. i'm not really a "flower" girl. those are the only ones i could remember.. lol

Keep looking, but i wouldn't stress if you can't find something. Flowers are such a small detail, that it's not really a loss if they aren't there. there is a website out there that has silk flowers REALLY cheap, and a good photographer can make them look amazing in pictures Smiley smile

    best of luck!

I'm not having any real flowers at all. My centerpieces are manzanita branches with crepe paper flowers, and overall they will cost about $10-15 a piece to make. My bouquets I am going to make with silk flowers. And that's it. I agree that the cost of flowers is outrageous and on our tight budget, it just wasn't important to me at all. First thing I cut out after favors.

Haha, my grandma used to own a florist, and we still know a lady that does flowers.. If it weren't for her offering to do whatever arrangements I DO want just at the flower's cost, I probably wouldn't HAVE flowers.. I'm doing everything as inexpensively as possible.. And it'll still be very nice.. and I couldn't give a hoot what anyone thinks aside from myself & my FH!

I love flowers so they were important to me. But I also refused to pay thousands for them. I don't think carnations and baby breath look cheap.

How many florists did you get a quote from?

I got quotes from about 3 florists before I decided to find a way in which I could make wholesale flowers work (Mason Jars!!). Now I'm solely shopping around different wholesellers but even then, it seems cheaper flowers are best.

Especially in December a lot of flowers aren't in season and price goes UP!

Does anyone happen to have a site where I can see what flowers ARE in season??

My bms carried handpieces that were probably about $1.00 apiece. I got one bunch of each of these and just cut one flower off of each of them and tied a gold ribbon on them and they were cute. Silk flower bride here, also. Some people will say that its a MUST to have real flowers, but oh well, its your day and your money.

Everyone has different views on the importance of flowers. To my DH and I, flowers totally unimportant. We wanted to put the mony into wowing our guests with food and booze for the weekend. I did silk flowers.

To my daughter and her FH, their theme is The Secret Garden, so fresh flowers are extremely important and are every where. They are paying about $1200 and the venue supplies all centerpieces.

Re carnations, as long as the bouquet is done well and without dyed carnations(use natural colors only), I think they look lovely with baby's breath and green filler.

As others in different threads have pointed out, no one will pay *nearly* as much attention to your flowers as you have-- and on the day, you won't notice at all! Go with what you can afford and don't sweat it.

IMO not important, my centerpieces are little apple buschels filled with green apples.

We are picking up bouquets at the grocery store the morning of and hand tying them.

heres another cheap floral idea though
