Are mason jars overdone?

MrsBest2B, on February 27, 2015 at 9:09 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 39

I've always loved the idea of a vintage/rustic wedding, even before EVERYONE started doing it. I collect mason jars, in fact, I have too many. I've always wanted mason jars as centerpieces, but in the short time I've actually been planning my wedding I've seen so many websites and even non-wedding related media (Tosh.O!) making fun of "another mason jar wedding." I really wanted to be "unique," but now I feel like what I always thought was unique is way overdone. I'm 34, most of my friends are married and not a mason jar was seen at their weddings, so I still feel like I'm ok but what are your thoughts on this? Anyone using mason jars or doing anything different with the same vintagesque feel? I was thinking about antique vases or wooden soap boxes, but I every time I see a mason jar I drool

It's completely your own personal opinion. If you love them, use them. But I personally think they're very overdone.

If it is something that you have always wanted to do then just do it! In 50 years when you are thinking back about your wedding you're not going to remember what everyone else did, you're going to remember what you and your husband did.

It's up to you. Don't let others dictate what your own wedding should look/feel like.

When I say yes, its only because its overdone to US. We are the ones planning a wedding and seeing them over and over again in different photos. Most likely your guests haven't seen them or been to too many weddings where they were used and it wont seem over done to them

It doesn't sound like it Is overdone in your circle. Go for it! I would use them as your centerpiece & keep it simple. I feel like it's not so much the mason jars themselves, but the use of them on invites, napkins, etc.

Yes. But your guests will probably think they're cute. unless they are in the wedding industry.....

For me and my circle no it's not. But mostly everyone I know is from NYC and you don't really see the rustic theme weddings there much.

I think you should do what you love, it's your wedding! I'm doing the rustic chic theme as well and you can definitely pull that theme off without doing mason jars. I personally am still going to incorporate mason jars into it somewhere (just a small part though). Mason jars are an everyday kitchen essential in my house so it doesn't bother me what people think

Also, we see so many weddings because we are in the planning process but most guests don't go to too many weddings in a year so things aren't so overdone to guests

I have the same feelings as OP. I collect the jars as well. I'm using some of the original blue jars as my center pieces not the new knock off ones or brand new clear ones. I even actually can food from my garden so I use jars and they have meaning to me. I agree there are pics all over Pinterest but no one in my family or circle has done it so it will be a new idea to my guest! One of my aunts bought a bunch of small dog bowls for her wedding years ago and almost every member of my family has borrowed them. I told mom over my dead body would they be at my wedding.

I have never been to a wedding where the bride has used them. I say go for it if its what you want, you could also add in some other vintage bottles/jars to mix things up if you want to.

Most people who have not been to alot of weddings or have not been planning would not know that its a "thing"

I see them all the tie on pinterest and every other wedding website but I have yet to see them used at a wedding I have gone to personally. If you love them and they are your thing I say use them!

I have never been to a wedding that had them either and I am using them. I had no idea they were such a popular thing when I first started planning over a year ago. It's your vision, so go for it!

Maltese nailed it. If your friends are a little older and not on the wedding circuit (FH and I are 28 and EVERYONE is getting married, so we're attending a lot in the next couple of years), they might not care.

Have you considered hobnail jars? They're a little different. I actually like them a lot better and think they look a little more elegant without losing the rustic feel.

I agree, if this is your dream don't NOT do it just because it's trendy. I was just talking to a girl who is having blush bridesmaid dresses (as am I) because she has ALWAYS dreamt of that. And now it's super popular and everyone is doing it, but she's sticking with it because that's her vision. Don't worry about why anyone thinks you're doing it. You know why and it's how you want it.

It's all I see on Pinterest, but I have never actually been to a wedding where I saw this. I am using mason jars for my centerpieces, because between me, my mom, and FMIL, I have plenty. And I don't want to spend more money than I have to. So I don't think it's overdone.

Chances are that unless they're into wedding stuff they won't think that they're overdone. Personally I'm just sick of seeing them on Pinterest and magazines.
