Are these floral prices reasonable?

Layla, on September 7, 2021 at 3:22 PM Posted in Planning 0 7
I had no idea that flowers were so expensive. My future MIL offered to pay for the flowers but I dread going to her with an $1800 price tag for my micro wedding 😩 My fiancé’s family does not have a lot of $ but I also want to have really nice flowers and I can afford to pay for them myself. I asked the florist if there was a way to save money by swapping flowers or reducing items and he basically said it’s not cost effective for him to do it for any less. I do want to go with this florist, would it be dishonest to tell my future MIL the cost is like $900 and pay the rest myself in private? These are the prices: Are these floral prices reasonable? 1

I don’t think I would be dishonest with your MIL. Things like those tend to come out, and you don’t want to look like a liar or come off like you think his family is cheap or unable to afford something. I would just show her the itemized statement and maybe say something to the effect of “I had no idea florals would be so expensive! I would be happy to cover a portion of it”. Then leave it up to them if they would like to take you up on the offer.

This actually seems like a pretty reasonable cost for all the things you’re getting, although it can be hard for us to know since prices change a looooot depending where you live.
I think PP advice on how to bring up the topic to your MIL was on point.

It looks reasonable to me, but I would get a couple estimates from other florists in your area and compare. Once you have options, you can show your MIL how you came to decide on this one.

I think you could go to your Mother in law and just be honest. Say you really want XYZ as far as flowers go, and that the price is $1800, but you would love to split the cost.

That's actually not that much. I'd tell her the truth.

"So MIL, I appreciate that you've offered to pay for the flowers. I've found a florist that I love, the flower package is gonna be $1,800, if you still wanna cover some of the cost but not that much, we're willing to pay the difference."

I think that these flower prices are reasonable given the current situation for flower farms and florists in general. Due to Covid there is way lower stock in a lot of flowers but tons of demand with everyone rescheduling their weddings, and therefore their wholesale prices have gone way up (at least this is the case for all the florists I know in my area, which is already higher priced for things). I agree with what a lot of other people have said, I would be honest with your MIL about the price and say that you want to go with this florist but don't feel comfortable with her paying for the whole thing and would like to pay for half (or however much you wanted to cover). Of course you can still look around for other offers too, but this price seems consistent with what I've seen.
