Are you getting your rings soldered?

Sarah, on October 19, 2014 at 10:06 PM Posted in Married Life 0 23

Has anyone gotten their rings soldered together after the wedding? Have you thought about it? My rings came as a bridal set. Sometimes one ring will spin and the other stays put, making them not always line up correctly.

What are you going to do? How long does it take?

I have a really simple band on my e ring that is just white gold and I'm pretty sure I'm going to just get a plain white gold wedding band so i don't feel like it matters much for me. For more intricate rings, though, i do like the soldered look, because of the spinning aspect. I'm not sure of cost but but i can't imagine it would take very long.

For the record, my DH says "The correct expression is 'tacked' because they don't use solder". Yes, he's an engineer-- how did you guess?! Smiley sexy

I had mine tacked together (by DH's logic they must use tacks to do it, I guess Smiley sexy), mostly cause the two bands together make a heart, so it was important to me that they line up. I believe the jeweler had them for less than a week, but it probably depends on how big your jeweler is (do they do their own work in shop, or do they ship it out?) and how busy.

Mine is also a set. I had them soldered together for the exact reason you mentioned. I love it and don't regret it. They are a hair tighter though. Sometimes I can't get them off in the morning when my hands are swollen.

I have considered it as well. My band only had diamonds across the front so it seems obvious to me when they aren't lined up. Though DH says I'm the only one who will notice!

I will be doing mine, possibly before the wedding. Our jeweler has to ship them out so it will be about 2 weeks.

My wedding ring is a "jacket ring" - I think that's what they're called. FH thinks I should have it done, but if they're already stuck together I don't see the need for the added expense.

I'm not doing it. My wedding band also has diamonds on it so it will be obvious to me and others when they don't line up but I like the ability to wear them independently. Also, I know he wants to "upgrade" my ring in 10 years but I'm going to want to keep the band just the way it is, so they'll need to be separate.

I will be getting mine joined because I have my engagement ring, wedding band and another band exactly the same as my wedding band on the other side so it is equal(yes I am slightly ocd lol). I don't like when they spin because the bands have diamonds 3/4 of the way around.

I am not. mine are not a set and my engagement ring and the wedding band i plan on getting are both very simple and classic. i just prefer them as two separate rings.

Tacking and soldering aren't the same thing. Soldering is more permanent than tacking. Tacking is usually done to keep the rings aligned while soldering.

I can't decide :/ Mine are a custom set but they don't spin that much. I'm just wondering if they'll wear each other out by rubbing against each other over time?

Mine are a set too. I'm not planning to have them soldered, but will consider it if I notice that they are starting to get scratched up.

I spoke to the jeweler when we chose our rings about how much and how long, etc. and they told me it was only $25 to have them joined together (which I thought was amazing) and she wouldn't say how long because of how many they have to do at the time, etc. I personally have a set, where the wedding band fits around the engagement ring and if i don't have it done, they won't line up. I also have to have my rings resized, so i'm probably going to do that first, and then have them put together so that they don't spin.

I am also having mine done for the same reasons you mentioned. He took mine Tuesday and said I would have it back tomorrow. All nice and clean just in time for the wedding! I sure feel naked without it though!

No, I'll like the option of wearing them independently

No, I dont think I will. I think I may want to wear them separately at times.

No. My engagement ring would be a nice heirloom piece and I wouldn't want to devalue it by soldering.

And not to be totally morbid, but I like the idea of being buried with my wedding band.

I can't wear my engagement ring at work, because it doesn't really fit under gloves (I work in a lab). Also, I sometimes use wrenches at work and would hate to damage it with a heavy wrench. I am planning to get an inexpensive, plain, rose gold band that I can wear all the time, even at work, so I will not have them soldered.
