Are you having ushers? How many? What do they do?

Debating whether we want ushers at all. Initially, I wanted to assign teenage girls in my circle, my niece and two daughters of my friends. I thought it would be cute and would give them a small wrist courage. I haven't asked yet as I'm not sure what all they would need to do. I'm not printing programs. They would only be escorting people to their seats at the ceremony. Or I could ask the guys in my friend circle, 3 men who would be willing to do the part. And one of them will be driving us after the wedding.
What else do ushers do? What should I take into consideration in this decision?

We're having my brother and grooms brother as our ushers. We're basically going to have them welcome family as they go to sit down (since each will recognize family from their side), to help our grandparents when they arrive, and to direct immediately family to their reserved seats in the front couple of rows. I don't think we'll have them walk down each individual group. But I guess they are also there to answer questions about it being open seating except first reserved rows too.

My mother-in-law tried to convince us to have ushers, saying we needed them for older guests, but in the end, we didn't have any guests who would really have needed assistance walking down the aisle. We hadn't been to a wedding that had ushers in years. I honestly think the usher trend is on its way out. However, if you want to have your nieces be your ushers, I think that would be really cute! It'd also be a good way to have them involved in the wedding if you don't have another job for them.
