Are you suppose to tip the priest?

Bergkirk, on August 17, 2010 at 7:48 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

I have no idea if this is something you do or not?

THANKS!

I'd like to know as well... and what is the normal amount that you give if you are expected to.

I believe they call them donations.

My church offered the following guidelines: "It is customary to provide a stipend for the priest or deacon celebrating your wedding. The stipend is usually equal to that of the organist. Your priest or deacon spends many hours preparing for your wedding. This stipend is optional and is your free will gift." FH and I are doing marriage prep with a different priest than our officiant, since we are being married by a friend who was recently ordained, so I think I may give the prep priest $200 and our friend $100 or $150 (less time spent)... the organist gets $200.

Hmm... Good question... We are paying a "fee" of $450 - which includes an organist. Now I'm wondering if that includes a stipend for the priest... I hope so!

We followed the "same as organist" thing. We ended up giving the priest $100, as that was what the organist asked for.

We paid $600 for the church and does not include organist. I just feel that should be enough, we still need to pay for the people playing at the ceremony. We payed almost $300 for the "Engaged encounter" and another $60 b/c they made us take a NFP (Natural Family Planning) class. That is almost $1000 so hopefully I will be forgiven if I don't make any additional donations.

We paid a lot for our officiant...and I think he was possibly hanging around for a tip as well, but I am not sure. We paid 450 I think for our officiant alone, but he is experienced and just amazing so it was worth it!

It all depends on the relationship you have with the officiant. Ours was just as humbled to perform our ceremony as we were to have him. He wanted nothing....we liked him so much that we gave him 150.00 and a personalized pen. Some people in this business are really geniune and do things from the heart....for others it is all about the money....

We are paying the catholic church $350, so I guess I am confused, are you all, giving this money as a tip to the priest, or are you paying him extra money of $100 - $200?

    Thnx!
