Ashtray Ideas

Leslie, on March 4, 2018 at 2:50 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 32
I'm having an outdoor wedding in my backyard. My fiance nor myself are smokers, but we have A LOT of friends who are. I see a lot of people posting about having specific smoking areas, but I personally don't care for that idea because I don't want my friends being separated and not mingling, and I know if you give a smoker lots of alcohol they are going to be smoking more frequently and will probably end up staying in that designated smoking area. With all that being said, I plan to just have a few ashtrays located around the yard. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make an ashtray look cute and not ugly or tacky? I have a bunch of empty paint cans from home renovations, but cannot seem to find any ideas that I like on Pinterest. I guess it should also be stated that we are having a vintage theme for our wedding. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I cannot be around cigarette smoke. I can't stand the smell and it makes me gag. I would be completely grossed out and would probably leave as soon as possible if people were smoking all over.

Because smoking is in and of itself tacky I'm not sure how to dress up an ashtray to make it not tacky. Maybe paint the cans, put a cute saying in them and fill with sand.

I totally understand. We don't like cigarette smoke at all either, but with a majority of our guests as smokers, plus we always have bbqs without designated areas, it just didn't make sense to us. Thanks for your input. 😊

I guess it depends on your crowd, but I also would not hang around long if there were people smoking all over. I assume in this day and age, your friends are used to going to a separate area to smoke. Also, do you really want your dress to reek of cigarette smoke? Gag.

I would never accommodate someone's smoking habit. So, smoking will not be allowed at all at our venue. I can't stand cigarette smoke. We will also serve no alcohol.

If you google cigarette receptacle there are some options that come up that aren’t necessarily cute but they aren’t offensive looking.

Chances are, the smokers are all going to congregate in one place anyway so you might think about trying to designate at least a side of the yard so that people who would like to avoid the smoke are able to.

I think you might want to consider that there are people who have smoke allergies or asthma, and will not be able to stay if you don't have a designated smoking area. I, personally, start coughing up projectile mucus and can't stop if I'm around smoke for just a few seconds. The longer I'm stuck in a smoking environment, the worse it gets. It's not just a matter of not liking smoke for some people... it can be about not being able to breathe or control one's bodily functions. I think it would be best to have a seating area set up off to the side with plenty of ashtrays so that anyone who wants to smoke can go lounge in that area for a bit. They'll be comfortable and so will any guests who can't be around smoke.

The designated smoking area isn’t for smokers. It’s so that other people can separate themselves from the smoking. As someone who was a smoker for a decade, I can tell you that everyone I know that smokes walks away to another area to do so. I would just set up a table for smokers and put a few ashtrays on the table.

I am seeing a lot of people trying to encourage me to have a smoking section. The point of this post was for IDEAS ON ASHTRAYS. Great, you have an opinion on someone else's wedding. That's fine. But it really is off topic here. Let's stick to the question at hand please.

There’s nothing you can do to an ashtray to make it cute. If you’re using old paint cans, just strip the labels off and paint them a neutral color.

Painting the cans and filling them with sand sounds nice, particularly if they are in your wedding colors.

You might also be able to rent the stand up kind from the city. Additionally you could look for old school vintage ashtrays. They can be very decorative, I feel like I see them at thrift stores and estate sales a lot.

The standing ashtrays are impressive, but they don't look at all appropriate for a backyard wedding. I would just use your paint cans or look for some ordinary ashtrays in your wedding colors. Nothing is going to make an ashtray look cute. It is unusual to hear of any group of smokers who thinks it's ok to smoke in the midst of non smokers at any social event.

Abalone shells are very pretty and cheap ashtrays. You can find them on Amazon, people use them as "smudging" bowls too for when they sage their homes.

Cheapy cut glass ashtrays that look like crystal are also available at thrift shops though. I had all sorts of them when I was an "evil" smoker.

The nasty responses about smokers on this thread are ridiculous. Some people responded as if you'd asked where you could find the fanciest spoons for your heroin addict friends to heat their drugs before shooting up, jeesh.

Smokers are addicted folks, They're going to smoke somewhere outside at your wedding.

I literally had to STOP READING and STOP GOING OUT for TWO YEARS when I quit. I still can't read a book without wanting a cigarette, and it's been six years. Quitting is much harder than you can imagine. There's no reason to be so ugly towards smokers who made a dumb decision when they were teenagers and ended up addicts. We all make stupid mistakes when we're kids.

Glad I'm not alone. It's very frustrating. Good for you for quitting; it really is not an easy feat. Thanks for your input!! I'm new to wedding planning but I think thrift stores are going to be my best friend!

She did say it was a vintage wedding, back yard or no they have a vintage vibe.

And anything can look cute, or elegant. People used to smoke in the highest class of establishments, and they had elegant ashtrays that fit with the decor.

Speaking as an ex smoker who also made a dumb decision when I was young, I do not view any of the responses as being ugly towards smokers. What we all are saying is that we are long past the day when it was acceptable for smokers to smoke in the midst of others. I am quite sure you are aware of the side effects of second hand smoke.

It is inconsiderate of the OP to encourage the smokers to mix and mingle with the other guests, rather than have a designated smoking area. This topic is no different than any other matter of etiquette. If you post publicly that you are going to be inconsiderate of your guests who do not smoke, someone is going to tell you so.

I think this, as well as the other comments on cigarette smoke, is a little off topic. I was only asking for ideas on ashtrays - not your opinion of cigarette smoke or if I should allow it. I was also in no way saying that I was going to be inconsiderate to my guests. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and is allowed to plan their wedding however they like. I have no problem with people ranting their opinion, but let's keep it on target with the original question posed.
