Atkins diet question.

Mrs.Hawks, on April 21, 2016 at 2:22 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 38

FMIL wants to start the Atkins diet because she says it worked really well for her. The food she said she ate makes me feel like it's impossible to drop weight on it. You eat anything that doesn't have any carbs so no fruits or veggies, nothing but meat, cheese, eggs, sugar free jello, pork rines and stuff like that. Then after the first couple of weeks you start introducing fruits and veggies little by little. I started it with her but am super uneasy about it. Has anyone else ever tried this? She said she lost a lot of weight on it before but it just sounds weird.

There should be no diet that recommends sugar free chemical laden jell-o, ever.

This is a 90s diet, the theory is fine the but any "diet" not referring to what humans naturally eat is ridiculous, IMO.

It has actually changed quite a bit from the original Atkins diet. You can find lots of information for free on the Atkins website. Here's a list of the approved foods (including lots of veggies) during the beginning phase of the program: https://www.atkins.com/how-it-works/atkins-20/phase-1/low-carb-foods

I did it when I was in high school when it was the latest fad. I lost 20 lbs before I went off to college and gained it all back. It was hell not being able to eat apples and other fruit. That's what I love about weight watchers, you can eat fruit until your heart's content.

Atkins is more than just meat, cheese and eggs. You eat carbs from veggies...It's more about cutting out the processed crap. Do some research first so you understand it. It worked for me and did wonders to my blood pressure and overall health.

My worst fear is gaining it all back. I did a little research on it this morning and showed her it's a little different now then when she first did it. Im just uneasy about it. It sounds weird and kind of unhealthy to me. I just want to see if anyone has had success with it or not. I'm very skeptical of diets.

    As you should be.

Regulated "diets" by the health food industry are a total and utter joke.

Eat less, move more, lots of veggies & fruits. Tada!

You shouldn't think of it as a diet, but a lifestyle change. Eat real food that's not processed and that grew from the ground. Pork rinds and jello should never be in a diet. And I hate when people say cut out all carbs. CARBS ARE ENERGY. You need carbs - just make sure they are coming from real, non-processed food. If you're set on looking into a "diet," I'd recommend Whole30, or a variation of that.

I lost 70lbs before my wedding and maintained that just fine until i got pregnant and did it again to lose the pregnancy weight. It's definitely possible to maintain, you just have to be aware of your limits. It's an eye opener on how carb sensitive my body is (also to processed foods)

Everyone's body is sensitive to carbs and processed foods, lol. You're not supposed to have that much. It's like people who say "I'm gluten-sensitive, I get SO tired after eating pasta!"

Yeah, you and the rest of the world lady.

I just wish the word "diet" would die.

The main premise is cutting carbs to the point that your burn fat for energy instead of carbs. As with any weight loss program, you should discuss it with your doctor before beginning. I lost weight with Atkins in the early 2000. I have lost weight with Weight Watcher's. With any program, you need to eat less calories and burn more (exercise - even if just walking). When all of these programs stopped being effective, I was evaluated for other health issues. I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder (Hashimoto's) and no amount of diet and exercise are going to work when your body is not functioning correctly. Hence the need to have any plan supervised by a physician.

Thanks ladies. I've been trying all the above and feel defeated because I've been having back issues which my doctors can't figure out why. It stops me from working out. I use to love to run and now feel like I can't because of my back. They're still running tests. I'm trying to change how I eat because I'm tired of feeling sluggish and I will admit I let myself go. I did 21 day fix which helped because I didn't think of it as a diet but a life change like you ladies are saying. Maybe I'll try that again instead. It really showed me portion control and what's good for your body.

Bailey that was my biggest red flag. That made absolutely no sense to me to cut most of them out. That's why I asked this question because it didn't seem healthy to me.

@m.m, there are people with medical conditions that actually are carb sensitive. PCOS is a great example of this.

@FutureMrsHawks, I am on a low carb, low sugar diet for the condition I listed above. I eat a diet that is heavy in meats and vegetables. Some vegetables are heavier in carbs than others, so just be careful to avoid ones that have a lot of carbs in them. Talk to your doctor or a nutritionist to find out the number of daily carbs recommended for you. Then, be conscious of the number of carbs you eat with each meal so you can ensure you're following that recommendation. I typically cut starches from most of my meals, or I eat a small amount of whole grain/wheat pasta. I also found a cool bean based pasta that is under 20g carbs per serving. Just check the labels on things to make sure the carb count is lower, and keep in mind that there is a such thing as good carbs, and you just need to eat those in smaller quantities. Our bodies require a certain amount of carbs for our brains to function, so cutting them out completely is a bad idea.

I also eat fruit. It's natural sugar, and much easier for our bodies to break down. I'm not allowed to make a meal of it, but fruit is good for you.

This kind of carb restriction diet can help you lose weight, as long as you also exercise. Once you get the results you're looking for, you can increase your carb intake a bit, but don't go crazy, or you'll gain all the weight back.

I did Atkins. It was hard to give up carbs, but I still ate lots of non starchy veggies, small amounts of fruit, and lean meats. I lost 60 lbs in roughly 6/7 months and I've kept it off for several years. I didn't continue it forever on a hardcore level, but I don't love breads, pastas, etc like I used to. My Dr now has me on a paleo diet for medical reasons, it's been a rough couple of days haha.

It is really the only thing that works for me.

    wine. meat. cheese. salad.

once I start with carbs, it's over.

I highly recommend microwaveable pork rinds. I know that sounds gross, but the crunch is a really good sub for potato chips....etc.

I tend to be one of those people who functions well with few choices. It's egg whites or turkey breast. Once I start folding other things into the mix? I'm fucked.

Samantha, having a medical condition that results in you being carb sensitive and just calling yourself carb sensitive because you got sleepy or put on weight when you ate bread are two very different things Smiley smile

It does limit fruit because of the sugar, but most of the healthy benefits of fruit can easily be replaced with lower carb vegetables. Just as an example, we think of citrus fruit for vitamin C, but yellow bell peppers actually have 3x as much vitamin C as citrus.

My husband is diabetic and when we were following this type of plan, he was able to completely stop all of his insulin within just a couple of weeks. If you do try it, try to just stick with it as much as possible. It's so much harder to get back on track once you've started eating the high carb stuff again.
