FMIL wants to start the Atkins diet because she says it worked really well for her. The food she said she ate makes me feel like it's impossible to drop weight on it. You eat anything that doesn't have any carbs so no fruits or veggies, nothing but meat, cheese, eggs, sugar free jello, pork rines...

You eat anything that doesn't have any carbs so no fruits or veggies, nothing but meat, cheese, eggs, sugar free jello, pork rines and stuff like that. Then after the first couple of weeks you start introducing fruits and veggies little by little. I started it with her but am super uneasy about it. Has anyone else ever tried this? She said she lost a lot of weight on it before but it just sounds weird.

WW Laura FH is also diabetic and one of our goals is to get him to stop using so much insulin. He's becoming resistant to it which is terrifying.

I did it years ago and it was the fastest way to lose and I lost more than any other diet. However, it was so stinking hard! Ive tried multiple times to do it again but just don't have as strong of willpower. Also, i hate meat which makes it tough. If you're gonna do this it will work but you have to be 100% committed. Otherwise, your body will latch onto any sort of cheats or carbs. I think it's a good diet for a very quick fix. The weight comes back on super fast if you don't slowly reintroduce the carbs.

There are some veggies you can eat and I dropped 100 lbs doing the Atkins and exercising ... It is tough but if you like meat and fish you can do it

I second doing the Whole30. It's more about a healthy, sustainable lifestyle than just losing weight (although weight loss is a benefit!).

I don't believe in diets like Atkins either, and my regiment is a lot like the other ladies with the same opinion: reasonable portions, vegetables and some fruit, whole grains, protein (espeically lean), less sugar, less salt. No processed foods. And then get some exercise including strength and not just cardio.

ETA: I believe in the lifestyle change thing too. A "diet" should be something you have everyday for the rest of your life.

I'm more in favor of a modified paleo diet myself, though even that is a bit far fetched. If you're not a high calorie burner then the less refined carbs and starches you eat, the better. That leaves all the meats, veggies, and some fruits as desired :-)

My parents did this when it first came out. They lost a good amount fairly quick but gained it all back just as quickly and you change your metabolism so your body become unable to digest certain carbs.

I personally don't agree with it.

Usually people from ten fifteen pounds from the lack of carbs and glucose leaving. And cutting out an entire macro will usually result in weight loss. But it's not a given. If you aren't in a calorie deficit you won't make it.

This is the original first draft of "paleo" before paleo became a thing.

Yea I did low carb and when I stopped *gasp* I gained it all back. Honestly, just watch your calorie intake using MyFitnessPal or another calorie tracking app and start exercising regularly

I'm down 90 pounds from my highest weight. I did that--and have maintained it for 7 years--through Atkins or the similar low-carb versions of Curves and Weight Watchers. You definitely need to exercise along with it--swimming or yoga might not upset your back as much, just go carefully--and you definitely need to eat veggies and some fruits.

I'm frantically trying to drop 10 pounds in the next two weeks via Atkins; I was down 100 pounds from my highest weight when I bought my wedding dress, but got lazy over the last year and gained those 10 pounds back. My dress still zips, even without shapewear, buuuut....

Anyway, go for it. Just look into *modern* Atkins or the low-carb plan on Weight Watchers, not the old pork-rinds and bacon version.

The adkins diet is SO bad for you. I eat exactly the opposite if adkins, high carbs (fruits, starches, rice, veggies) no oil, meat or dairy, and I've lost 20 pounds and feel amazing! Your body feeds on carbs for energy, adkins diet causes so many long term health issues ( ER RN)

She's doing the old Atkins... The new reformed Atkins actually concentrates on low carb veggies. The version she is doing is not healthy.

I have done Atkins a few times in the last 10 years. Every time, I've lost between 20-45lbs. I like it because it gives me energy. When I eat a high protein, low carb diet, drinking lots of water, I end up feeling great! You do get carbs but it's healthy carbs from green vegetables.

I tried that for one day and binged. Sounds like you'd lose weight because you aren't eating much carbs and I've seen people do it but they are horrible to be around because they are so grouchy.

Thanks everyone! I'm concentrating on eating healthy and exercising. I've lost 8 pounds in a month which is a healthy weight loss. Very excited!
