When I went to key west I stayed at the Casa Marina resort with a friend whose mom works for Hilton so we paid $90/night. It was beautiful and has one of the few “beaches” on key west, but I definitely didn’t think it was worth what the standard rate was. The southernmost resort is right next door and seemed nice. I probably would have liked to stay at one of the small inns, but that may be awkward on a honeymoon and not enough privacy?

We had dinner at the restaurant at the reach hotel right on the ocean and it was beautiful!
We had brunch at blue heaven which was fun and very key west.
We also had dinner at hot tin roof overlooking the ocean/Mallory square. The sunset was incredible from our table!
Our last dinner was at Santiago’s Bodega and the food was amazing! Not as great ambiance as the other two because it’s not on the water, but the food was very, very good (tapas).
We got dessert at better than sex. It was certainly an experience haha.
Not sure how much time you have or if your plans are set in stone, but I went to islamorada with my now-husband when we were dating and I found that to be WAY more romantic than key west. Key west is very party/debauchery and not necessarily the scene I would want for my honeymoon (just my preference/just like how I would not want to go to Vegas for my honeymoon). For example, both nights we went out on duval we saw people partying ages 21-probably 75 until 2 AM (lots of families partying together). I’m a criminal defense attorney from Florida and the saying with key west is “come on vacation, leave on probation.”

We’re staying at a Bed and Breakfast, the Duval Gardens! It’s supposedly on the quiet end of Duval. They don’t permit large group bookings or anyone under 21, so it should nice!

Mallory Square is definitely on the list! I was an English Literature major and he was a History major (although now a sheriff’s deputy, so he’ll love the probation saying😂) so when we aren’t enjoying the sun and sand, we’re going to be checking out all the historical stops! If we’re being honest, Hemingway’s house was a huge influence in choosing Key West, haha.
I certainly understand where you’re coming from. I think we both wanted to get out and do something different (from rural Appalachia: southwest Virginia). We’re splitting the week between Key West and Sanibel Island (private beach house). Best of both worlds — a little party and a little lowkey!
