Auctioning off the garter

So my FH just told me it is commonplace around here (central South Dakota) to auction off the garter and that he wants to do it at our wedding. He was kind of shocked when I gave him a look of horror and vehemently told him that we will NOT be doing that as I feel it is kind of tacky especially...

So my FH just told me it is commonplace around here (central South Dakota) to auction off the garter and that he wants to do it at our wedding. He was kind of shocked when I gave him a look of horror and vehemently told him that we will NOT be doing that as I feel it is kind of tacky especially since we are having a destination wedding! No way am I doing that when people have already paid so much to even attend!

So my question is, do people in other parts of the country do this?! And do you think it is as tacky as I do?

Unless the auction proceeds were going to a charity -- absolutely not.

Never heard of it. I don't like the idea either. I don't think we will be doing a garter toss anyway

Yes, it is a thing here in SD. And honestly, we have alot of fun with it. Typically, the father of the groom buys it to give it back to the groom. I've had uncle's pitch in and run the garter up on the father of the groom (almost like a silent auction style) but the last money in the hat when the bids quit wins the garter. They ended up with about $500 in the hat for my brother's wedding just a month ago. It's not as bad as you make it sound. The groom takes off the garter (sometimes groomsmen play a joke on the groom blindfolded and replace the bride with one of them...so he's actually taking the garter off of his buddy's leg) it can be pretty entertaining. Just have fun with it....it's not as awkward as everyone is making it out to be.

I just learned of this dollar dance business which my FH wants to do, but never an auction. How funny!

Its super common in South Dakota and Minnesota. It's usually done if you are also doing the dollar dance and the bouquet toss.

Also whoever wins the auction gets to pick how the garter is removed (within reason)

I've seen it done at a few weddings out here, but I always thought it was weird!
