Average price for bridesmaids hair

Mary, on May 4, 2018 at 2:33 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 15

Ok so I have a hair stylist coming to do hair and makeup. There are only two people having makeup done so I a just talking about hair. They said they each charge $150/hr (this price includes their tip). I am having the bridesmaids so low updos. The stylist said it would take 30mins-45mins to do. So I had told them it would be about $80 for hair. Well when I went for my hair trial my stylist said about $100. So my questions is, what is the average cost to have bridesmaids hair done? I have offered to pay the difference if needed for people. One bridesmaid is making me feel terrible about the $20 difference where the others are fine with the difference. I just feel terrible to the point of crying because I know it is a lot of money.

If you are requiring a certain hairstyle, you need to pay all of the costs, period.

All I am requiring is that it is a low updo. I do not have a specific style picked out.

You're still requiring some sort of up-do though. Will you give them the option to do the low up-do themselves? If so, then you don't have to pay. However, if you are requiring the low up-do be done professionally, then you need to cover the full cost for all of your bridesmaids.

Yes, I am fine with them doing their own hair. One bridesmaid talked about doing it herself but decided not to

Ok, I misunderstood. It sounded like you were requiring them to get their hair professionally styled and pay for it themselves. So the one who does have an issue with paying should do her own hair if she can't afford it.

I've never heard of a stylist charging by the hour. Generally it's a flat fee and they don't build in a tip as tips are discretionary and not required. However, based on the math, if it's $150/hr. and it could take 30-45 minutes, than the range would be $75 - $112.50, so I'm not sure why you told them $80. If the $20 is too much for one of your BMs to handle, then maybe you can privately cover it for her. Frankly, if I had made the mistake, I would have told the hairstylist to just charge them what I quoted them and I will cover the difference.

I did the math just as you did and did an in between number, no mistake. As I said I have offered to pay the difference and still getting guilt tripped by a BM. I have been to several weddings where the tip is built into the price.

My bridesmaids were charged $100 each for an updo, it was less for my MOH who just wanted hers lightly curled with a little braid across the top.

Agree with PP that being charged by the hour is highly unusual for a hairstylist, it's usually a flat fee per service, regardless of how much time it takes them to do it.

Tips should be at your discretion, and while I always believe in tipping 20% for service, I find it icky that they would be so presumptuous as to include it in their fees.

You are not required to pay for bridesmaid hair, it’s nice that you offered to pay the difference but don’t feel like you have to pay for the whole thing. I think that’s a fair price for bridal hair. We are having the salon come to wedding site, updos start at $90 and that’s including 1/2 up 1/2 down. Hope this helps! Good luck!!

Are you set on this one stylist or are you willing to continue the search? As posted above, charging by the hour and adding a tip seems a bit out of the ordinary and will cause them to lose money in the long run. Try getting a few more quotes and see if you can find someone cheaper. If not, I would just cover the difference and tell her to not worry about it.

I am set on this stylist because she has always been my stylist. I just did some heavy research for my area and the average cost is $100-$150. So I feel better about it. Thank you Catherine for your support. I know for the weddings I was a BM in I paid about that much but I guess I just feel guilty asking anyone to spend that much.

My hair stylist charges her wedding on-site service by the hour, the same amount at $150/hr (though not including tip, which is at the client's discretion).

I have never heard of them charing by the hour. Typically they charge by style and sometimes hair length. If they are coming to you, they sometimes require a travel fee. Most places I reached out to wanted $100 for hair and another $100 for make up. I was lucky enough to find a great person who is doing hair and make up for $100 per girl. I am paying for part of it for each girl.

Most of my quotes were $150-$160 hair and makeup. Equal costs for hair and makeup.
