Awful Makeup Trial

jt329, on October 2, 2018 at 4:01 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 18
I really need advice about whether I should try another trial with the same girl, ask for a different stylist at this salon where I already put in a deposit, or find another place altogether.

Okay, so I just want to let everyone know that I didn't get any pictures of myself immediately after the hair/makeup trial or after I tried to fix it, so I'm sorry there's no visual! I honestly started wiping it off as soon as I got to the car and cried most of the way home. It was bad. I almost didn't let FH see it, but I did in the end so he could understand why I was so upset.

I asked for a natural but noticeable look and showed her inspiration pictures of girls with pinkish nude lips and natural color eyeshadows. I'm just going to describe what happened the best that I can.

I know makeup should be heavier for pictures, but I wiped my face with tissues countless times to make it less orange and blend it more through the day and it still took 3 makeup wipes to get off 11 hours later, then I still had foundation rubbing off on my towel after I washed my face. Is that normal? I don't have bad acne or very uneven skin, so there's not really anything needing to be hidden with foundation.

I got a spray tan two days before like I want to for my wedding, and it's pretty natural. But my artist did my airbrush foundation SO orange and I couldn't see any blush or contouring. Then, while complimenting my lips, she made my top lip pointer and my lower lip lined bigger so it was obviously not natural, plus she did a "bold nude" which was like the color of that purple-pink silly putty from the 90s. My fake eyelashes were not blended with eyeliner except a thick line above them, so you could see they were fake from looking at me, and the glue started to show within two hours.

My hair was fine, I guess, but I wanted a more loose, flowy, bohemian half-down braided style and I got more of a princessy style with a 1-inch part in the front and tight curls. She didn't use any hairspray so by the time I could, the braid was already falling.

I just don't know what to do. I spent $130 on the hair and makeup and I left so devastated, but I don't want to be that girl that complains after trying to be nice and saying it was fine. Any advice would be so appreciated!

Its good you did a trial! I wouldn't give her another shot. I'd either go with another artist or a different salon entirely, I'd look at reviews online prior to booking. I did two trials before booking, and hated the first one!

That's what I was thinking too. This salon has really great reviews for bridal services and I get a discount for everything so I've gotten my hair colored and cut there twice, plus the spray tan, and loved those. Is it rude for me to ask for someone else though? I don't know how to ask for that without coming off rude. I watched the girl who did my spray tan do a bride's makeup while I was there and I liked hers, so I kind of want to request her but I'm scared to go through anything like this again. Was your second trial at the same place as the first?

Move on and find another artist. You should feel your most beautiful and not apprehension the day of your wedding. From what you are saying they didn't try very hard to make you happy.

I don't think so. I'd look on the reviews and see who is positively mentioned by name, and ask for them. If they ask why, I'd just say you were too unhappy with your first one to try the same person again. And no, it was at a different salon.

This is your big day and your spending alot of money. Its very important to make sure your happy with your look. You can be firm and stand up for yourself without being rude and if they think your rude for stating you dont like something or you dont like the way that person did your make up then def seek out a new salon.

That sounds like a good idea. I know I worry too much about pleasing people but when people are performing services for me, I don't want to make anyone mad. With your second trial that you liked, how much foundation did they use? Did you feel like it was natural but heavier than normal? I couldn't believe how much was on my face but if that's how it is, I want to be prepared haha.

I'm not a fan of airbrush, so she did traditional makeup. I don't think it was a crazy amount, but it was a primer & liquid & powder. I knew I was wearing makeup but it didn't bother me how much.

I might end up trying that instead of airbrush. My everyday look is literally next to nothing, so I wasn't sure if it was normal or not. Thank you so much!

Oh for sure, don’t feel bad about choosing not to go with this artist, it’s your big day and it’s you get to choose how you look! There shouldn’t be any anxiety with how you’re going to look that day, since you should feel your most beautiful Smiley heart All the best!! Don’t forget to take pictures next time! Xx

This is why trials are necessary! Whoa! Smiley smile There is nothing wrong with telling the salon that this particular artist wasn't your cup of tea. It's no big deal, and it is all about what you want. Tell them what concerned you, and be honest about it. They should be able to work with you to find a better artist to hit your vision on the mark. Be picky! It's all about you!

This is the point of the trial! If you don't like the look or the skills keep looking. I can let go of things that have to do with style (for example if the eyeliner is not winged out to your preference, lipstick not your preferred color, etc.) and I wouldn't worry about how much makeup it seemed like she was applying on you--that could be professional product which has crazy insane amount of pigment. But don't hesitate to critique skills like matching foundation, properly applied lashes, contouring, etc. This seems severely lacking if she can't match your skin. I'm surprised she considered this a finished look.

I'm aghast she didn't even apply hairspray??????????????? Is she expecting you to carry around a huge bottle of hairspray on the wedding day?????????? don't make excuses for them, if it's not what you asked for then it's not what you asked for.

This sounds so terrible I'd call back and let the salon know how lacking their bridal services are and that they aren't preparing brides properly if this is how they expect to perform the day of.

PS--I'd much rather be the "girl that complains after trying to be nice and saying it was fine" instead of the "really unhappy because she didn't speak up and ask for what she wanted" girl.

It seems like she messed up pretty bad and didn’t understand what you wanted, so I would go with another artist. I had a pretty bad makeup trial myself the other weekend. The foundation was good and the right color, but the concealer under my eyes made me look like I was 80 years old I had so many fine lines that I never get when I do my own makeup, not to mention it was so yellow. I asked for rose gold eyeshadow and she gave me copper/orange, and the eyeliner was so thick but still didn’t cover the seams of my false lashes, and it transferred onto my eyelid after like an hour. The foundation/concealer on and around my nose also rubbed off somehow like an hour in even though I was making a conscious effort to not touch my face at all. This is exactly what I was worried about when I scoured the internet for a good makeup artist for my wedding. I wish I would’ve spent a few extra hundred dollars to go with the other company I wanted, to be honest. My hair was amazing (different person from the makeup artist) but the makeup, no. When the owner of the company emailed me the day after asking for follow up on how it turned out, I was not blunt. I told her every single thing I didn’t like or that didn’t work. So she offered me a complimentary second trial. Some products don’t work for certain people, I know that from years of trial and error with my own makeup. And I don’t think the MUA had a palette with the rose gold type shadow I was looking for, but if that was the case she should have told me that. So I don’t blame her completely, but we’ll see how a second trial goes! If it doesn’t work out, I’m telling the owner that I want a different artist though, even though conflict like that kills me. I never want to be mean to anyone, but this is my wedding day and I refuse to pay someone to essentially make a mess of my face. My mom and sister are also having theirs done by the same person so I need to be confident in her!

I had a terrible trial too. Don't feel bad about being nice or not this is for your day you should look and feel amazing! I would just look for another MUA to do a trial with. That's the whole point of trials... to try them out and see if they're a good fit.

    Hi,
so first and foremost congratulations and happy planning.

I am a hairstylist and makeup artist so this is a great thread for me. As a stylist who knows not much about you there are a few things that I would do during a consultation; first would be I’d ask if there are pictures that you like, which you did. That’s great then from there I’d ask what your day to day makeup routine was. From that I’d get an understanding of how much makeup you wear regularly if any at all. You did all the right things and checked all the boxes. When it’s come to makeup I always like to say less is more and when in doubt you can always add more if needed or wanted. If you haven’t already found another MUA I would recommend finding more pictures and being very specific about what you like and what you disliked about your last trail. It’s important for the artist to know you and what you want to see. And calling that salon and discuss with the manager what you disliked. They will more than likely reschedule you for another trail complimentary.

As for your hair, as a stylist I like to use the least amount of product during a trail as possible. To see how your hair hold it’s style. Trials are just that. They are to see what your hair does in the following hours. When a hair trial is being done a few things need to be considered is your desired look one that matches your hair texture, length and quantity. If those all match then will the technician be able to execute this style. If you feel like it isn’t falling into place while the trial is being done, say something. It’s your hair and your vision. Stylists and MUA are there to make you feel beautiful and confident on your biggest day. And when in doubt if you can’t find the ability to say it have your family or friends that are there with you to say something. It’s better to hear it from any one than not to hear it at all and be disappointed that they weren’t given a chance to really blow your mind.

But when in doubt if your not comfortable with either technician ask for someone different, it doesn’t hurt our feeling. Not everyone connects and sometimes it’s just a matter of finding the person that you connect with.

I hope one this helps you and GOOD LUCK! And congratulations

Girl, I have been there! I was recommended a salon that specializes in wedding hair & makeup not only by brides in my area, but by 2 brides that I personally know. Since they were highly rated, I went ahead and put down the $200 nonrefundable deposit in order to get a trial with them. I was SOOOOO upset after my hair & makeup trial with them. My makeup was not even close to what I had wanted; I showed her 3 photo examples of makeup that was glam, but on the more natural side. What I got was messy black eyeliner & a wing, non-existent eyelashes, foundation that was way too light for my skin tone, and overall makeup that looked cakey. My hair was just a freakin' joke. It was honestly so bad and pathetic looking that when I went to pick up my wedding dress right afterwards, the owner of the bridal boutique asked if I needed recommendations on a hairstylist because my current hair looked so sad. So embarrassing.

I felt stuck, like I needed to stay within that salon because I already put down a fairly hefty deposit. After much debate, and hating my hair/makeup SO MUCH whenever I looked at the pics of myself, I decided to just eat the $200 deposit and research other stylists around. Luckily, I found a terrific hair & makeup team that gave me a much better trial and they ended up being more affordable; their cost + the $200 from the other place will still cost me about $300 less overall than if I stayed with the original people.

Anyway.... just know you're not alone. Horrible trials do happen (thank god they're trials and not the day of look!!). I suggest really researching all options and try to find a completely different stylist team!

I just want to say thank you to everyone who gave me advice! I called the salon today since I needed a few days just to calm down about it and the bridal coordinator will be calling me tomorrow to try to work out how we can fix it. I appreciate all of your responses so much!
