Bachelorette Party Nightmare! About to cry

Baranpartyof2, on September 21, 2016 at 12:40 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 42

My MOH and BM's planned my bachelorette weekend on 10/14-10/16 and won't tell me where we are going. I am super excited!!! We live in Orlando FL so I'm assuming we are going to Jacksonville or Miami. Well in Miami there is the Zika Virus going around and FH started freaking out about it. Saying that he doesn't want us to go to Miami. Well after I brought this to the attention to my bridesmaids of him freaking out, my bridesmaids decided to tell me what we are doing. They told me that we are going to Miami and they have already planned and booked the entire weekend. Spent hundreds of dollars and is not refundable. I want to be super excited but I can't help but stress about everything now. Does anyone have any advice or are knowledgeable on this Zika Virus? I heard that it's carried in mosquitoes and that it only really affects pregnant woman. I am not pregant and we are not trying until after we are married. I think that FH is making it into a bigger issue than it is needs to be....

Idk what I should tell my FH to have him not worry and let us go. I've never been to Miami and I was super excited until recently...

It depends on when you plan and start trying to get pregnant. I think it says something about 6 months.. But I'd suggest looking on the zika website and make yourself knowledgeable. But I think you'll be fine as long as you're not trying to conceive right after the wedding

Wear bug spray and if you are not trying to get pregnant for a while, you don't need to worry. Talk to your doctor, read guidance on the CDC's website. Also Zika will very likely spread to Orlando and most of Florida anyway

Point him to the CDC website. Zika is basically like a little cold. It's not a big deal unless you are pregnant or planning on getting pregnant in the next couple months. Use mosquito repellent and you should be fine.

I've seen the recommend not getting pregnant for between 8 weeks to 6 months. I don't think it will be a huge deal unless y'all plan on starting to try right away. Also when you go use tons of bug spray!

Instead of asking a wedding forum about Zika, I'd probably consult my doctor.

Talk to your doctor. If you're using protection and aren't planning on trying for a year, you should be ok from my understanding. Definitely wear bug spray the entire time.

Guess you'll need to put baby making back a little bit and speak to a doctor.

You can wear long sleeves and long pants the whole trip, and cover yourself in mosquito repellent and you should be fine!

We went to Central America for our honeymoon in August and were fine. I would suggest researching it and thinking about the PP suggestions on pregnancy.

Just wear a lot of big spray, no smelly stuff, and you'll be fine. You can wash your clothes in bug spray too if you'd like. We used bug spray wipes and I smelled gross the entire time, but I was fine.

We went to Key West for our honeymoon and stayed in Miami for a night. We wore a ton of bug spray and just tried to stay away from areas with mosquitos. We weren't outside really at all in Miami though bc we just stayed the night before our flight home. Neither myself of my DH had any symptoms in the 2 week incubation period, but we are waiting at least 6 months before we TTC.

Just be smart and talk to your doctor.

I live in South Florida! I was just in Miami this last weekend visiting my FIL. We were outside basically the whole day and night. Zika is nothing to fear. Its just something the news can make everyone hysterical about. Unless you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant soon, or are camping outside at night next to bodies of water while in Miami, you really don't even have an ounce of anything to worry about! Now get your bags packed! Looks like you're heading to MIA! Cheers! And by the way, Miami is super populated, one of the most populated cities in the US. And I can say there have been maybe 3 out breaks, and 2 of them weren't even Miami Natives, they traveled and brought it back with them. Your odds of contracting the Zika virus are probably about the same as getting struck by lighting. Smiley smile

If you are not pregnant or trying to become pregnant right now, I would not be too concerned. I actually work with a researcher who studies Zika virus and severe side effects outside of those circumstances are extremely rare.

Just lather yourself in bug spray. My bff lives in Miami and hasn't gotten it yet. I'm also going there in the next few months. It'll be fine, no need to be freaked out.

He's overreacting. I am a mosquito magnet (I got 16 bites in 2 hours just a few weeks ago) and not at all concerned about Zika, and I traveled to the Caribbean this summer. Wear a lot of bug spray and go easy on the lotion.

There's no need to freak out about Zika. FL is doing everything possible to eliminate the threat, and as people said, it's really most dangerous for people who are already pregnant. What you need to do is:

    - Wear bug spray, preferably with Deet. You can get this on Amazon or your local pharmacy.

    - If you get Zika, it comes on like the flu. It's not life-threatening whatsoever to adults.

    - If you have no symptoms, you can always get tested for it.

    - Wait 6 months after the trip to try to conceive.

If you are staying at a nice hotel/resort, they are constantly spraying for mosquitos. They do not want to be at the epicenter of this health crisis even less than you do. Stay out of places that mosquitos live, where there is still water, high grass, etc.

Thanks everyone. I felt so bad for my MOH b/c she spend so much money on this little vaca. And my FH and I were going to TTC as soon as we get married so i'll talk to a doctor about it for more information. And my MOH just brought up a valid point...there are millions of people in Miami. The odds of anything happening is very low..
