My MOH and BM's planned my bachelorette weekend on 10/14-10/16 and won't tell me where we are going. I am super excited!!! We live in Orlando FL so I'm assuming we are going to Jacksonville or Miami. My MOH and BM's planned my bachelorette weekend on 10/14-10/16 and won't tell me where we are going. I am super excited!!! We live in Orlando FL so I'm assuming we are going to Jacksonville or Miami. Well in Miami there is the Zika Virus going around and FH started freaking out about it. Saying that he doesn't want us to go to Miami. Well after I brought this to the attention to my bridesmaids of him freaking out, my bridesmaids decided to tell me what we are doing. They told me that we are going to Miami and they have already planned and booked the entire weekend. Spent hundreds of dollars and is not refundable. I want to be super excited but I can't help but stress about everything now. Does anyone have any advice or are knowledgeable on this Zika Virus? I heard that it's carried in mosquitoes and that it only really affects pregnant woman. I am not pregant and we are not trying until after we are married. I think that FH is making it into a bigger issue than it is needs to be....

It IS a problem if you want to get pregnant within a few months (think 4-8 weeks) of travel.

My OB ADvised bug spray and best to use full protection during that time

If you are that concerned, call your doctor! This is a wedding help website, not a medical site. A medical doctor is going to give you much more reliable information that a wedding forum.

And speak with your doctor if you're concerned.

This isn't a crisis or a nightmare. Tell your FH to calm his tits.

Google it instead of asking random people getting married - there's good medical advice from actual professionals out there. But it boils down to: as far as they know, Zika only affects the fetus if you're actually pregnant when you get infected. Since it sounds like that won't be an issue, you should be fine. Even if you get Zika on the bachelorette weekend, if you don't get pregnant for another few months it should be ok.

Your FH should also know that Zika can live in some body fluids for 3-6 months (eyes, semen) so if your FH is traveling to a Zika area, he could come back and infect you during unprotected sex.

I just had my bachelorette party in Miami this past weekend and I didn't see a single mosquito. I would get the mosquito replent bracelet & just stay sprayed up. Enjoy your weekend, you probably won't get another like it

I've always heard Zika can effect a pregnancy up to 2 years later, not a few months. But that being said, your chances of getting Zika are SO low that you should be fine. You can always get tested for it before you decide to try for a baby just to be safe, but if you look at the statistics (lady time I checked) no one had gotten Zika from within the US unless sexually transmitted, most are from traveling internationally and coming back to then find out they have it, which gets counted as a US statistic (pretty misleadingly, imo). Wear bug spray and avoid mosquito-y areas and you should be fine though!

I'll second the advice to go and enjoy your bachelorette party especially if you are trying to get pregnant right after the wedding (what's the rush?).. enjoy the fun while you can!

I was recently in Dominican Republic where it's more prevalent. Use OFF deep woods bug spray at all times just incase. My doctor said Zika virus is basically like having the flu but to not get pregnant 6-8 months minimum after having it. You'll be fine!

@SpaceCadet - The WHO is treating Zika as an STI. That's probably where that information is coming from. There is no information about long term effects of Zika because it's a newly studied virus.

Talk to your doctor, check out the CDC and the WHO information pages on Zika.

Bug spray, long sleeves and pants. I understand being worried, I would too, but to cancel it is overreacting unless you are currently pregnant.

Look at the CDC website for info on Zika. Why would a forum of strangers be able to convince your FH? Do 5 minutes of research and show your FH what you find out.

There have been zika cases outside of florida as well. I agree with PPs. bring lots of bug spray and wait 6 months after to TTC.

Orlando is taking Zika precautions as well. Unless you're planning to move in the next three weeks, there's no argument here.

Have you actually pulled up the Zika cases that were contracted in Miami (not foreign) it isnt that many. Especcially if we actually get a cold front before then I doubt you have anything too much to worry about. I live down in SWFL and I think I've maybe had one mosquito bite me all summer.

Zika matters if you are trying to get pregnant Don't worry if you aren't trying to have kids right now.

Do what other pps have suggested and go to the website.

    Edit: clarity

This would scare the life out of me... already does. We're honeymooning in December to the Bahamas... And the Bahamas was just added to the Zika list. I'm definitely worrying.

DH and I just went to the Caribbean for our honeymoon and I was super paranoid about getting bit. Here's what my doctor told us:

-don't get pregnant for at least six months (maybe even up to a year)

-don't leave the hotel room without covering yourself in bug spray. He said the best kind was Maxi Deet. We found it at Field and Stream for about $9 a bottle, but it was totally worth it.

I was probably more paranoid than I should have been, but it's always better to be safe than sorry!
