Backyard ceremony script

Jacque, on April 17, 2019 at 7:46 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 7
Okay, so I’ll start by saying I have no idea what I’m doing here lol. I’m trying to figure out how the whole ceremony script is supposed to go but all of the examples I’m finding online are cheesy/corny. My FH and I are pretty laidback, non-religious and don’t want it to be too sappy of an ordeal. We’re even having a friend of ours officiate. Any ideas on how to plan this out or ideas on what to have our friend/officiant say?

Hey Jacque! Congratulations on your engagement! I hope you don’t feel under pressure planning your wedding, a lot of people on WeddingWire are first time wedding planners so you’re not alone!

There are plenty of sample scripts online, as Jessica has shown, but there is no right or wrong way to do it. Obviously, there are parts that will be similar across all ceremonies, like welcoming the guests, exchanging vows, etc. but the body of the script can be specific to you as a couple. You could sit down with your SO and officiant to work through a script that is comfortable and personal to you.

Will you be having your reception in your backyard too?

Thank you! Immediately got excited once I saw one of these examples had Star Wars references. 😁

Yes, the reception will be in the backyard as well. Keeping things pretty low-key since an elaborate wedding really isn’t our style.

We spoke with our officiant/good friend last night, who lives out of state. He’s going to work on some ideas and send us a PPT presentation in a few days. (He’s taking this very seriously, which is so incredibly sweet and thoughtful of him.)

Here’s my dilemma: My FH don’t want the ceremony to be quite so formal or overly sentimental. We originally bonded over our love for all things Star Wars, our feelings on religion (or lack there of), our affinity for offensive memes, etc. That said, I don’t want the ceremony to necessarily be a complete farce and like the idea of it being somewhat traditional , but I don’t know if sonnets/readings, candle lighting, pouring of sands, etc. is our thing... which probably sounds like I’m completely contradicting myself.

Oh, and we met at a bar when he was dating someone else. (Disclaimer: we were just friends for well over a year before they broke up.) So, probably no stories of how we first met should be included... 🙄

That offbeatbride site is great! We're doing the exact same thing, backyard ceremony with a friend as the officiant and I've been wondering what to have her say too!

If you hire a professional officiant, they will have many ideas and suggestions for you for the ceremony. We had a backyard wedding and our officiant had many suggestions/options for ceremony readings. By picking and choosing what we wanted read/what we wanted to say, it was personalized and it turned out perfectly Smiley smile
