Backyard Wedding- Do we need a microphone?

darcy, on March 20, 2019 at 7:50 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 20

We are hosting a backyard wedding this June, there will be between 35/40 people attending. I'm wondering if we will need a mic. The yard isn't huge, but it's not fenced. I'm worried that people won't be able to hear the officiant or people giving speeches.

We are not using a DJ, I'm making my own playlists. So my options are to rent a speaker/mic combo from the same place we are renting the tents. OR for a bit less I can purchase a wonderboom and call it a day. OR get the wonderboom for music and use my friends karaoke machine for the mic. But then... no mic. My FH is against renting the set up as he thinks it's a total waste of money and not necessary.

Please share any and all backyard wedding music/mic experience you have. This is literally the only piece of the wedding not figured out yet and it's making me nervous. Thank you!

Unless you’re prepared to shout your vows to ensure everyone hears you, I’d always recommend a microphone. That way you can accommodate all your guests, especially if someone is having hearing issues but embarrassed to say something or if there are outside noises or disturbances that happen during the ceremony that are outside your control. I’d rather have one and not need it than need one but not have one.

    I vote for the microphone.
If you are like me, I speak softer, when I'm nervous .
As much as I don't want a microphone... I'm sure I'll need it.
    Congratulations! Happy planningSmiley smile 👰💐🌷🌺🌻🌹

I'd definitely get a microphone. 35/40 people is more than you think and people might be quite far away from you. Plus, if you have any older or hearing-impaired guests, they'll probably have trouble hearing you without the microphone.

I agree with previous posters. I have been at too many weddings where I can barely hear a word! Especially since you do not know what other noise may be around (there was literally a car alarm going off for half of my friend's wedding)!

My SIL got married at her yard, but they had microphones and they had about the same number of people as you. If you want people to hear you without you having to shout, I would definitely get microphones.

I'm also having a backyard wedding in June. My backyard is 2 acres so I'll definitely be using a microphone. I totally suggest the same for you!

There is nothing outside to help capture your voice, only things that can carry your voice away. You don’t want people to be listening to the wind, as even a slight breeze can carry your voice. A microphone is one thing I would definitely find a way to fit into the budget.
On another note, I think it’s so awesome you’re having a small backyard wedding. I’ve been to one and they are so much fun!

Yes absolutely get one. I went to a back yard wedding a year or so ago and the couple wrote their own vows they were super emotional but no one could hear a thing so it was just really awkward.

I think it depends on how loud you guys talk. Maybe go into the backyard and have someone stand as far away as the furthest guest will be, and you can rehearse to see if it's audible?

Yes! Definitely need a Mic. Honestly, they are very reasonable if purchased to sync with a speaker.

I have no experience per se, but, just my opinion- if either of you are at all shy or soft-spoken or might get choked up during your vows, get the mic. Not to mention, if youre at all worried about whether or not all the guests will for sure hear everything said - just get one to be sure they do and you wont have to question it.

We had the same amount of people on the beach for our ceremony and we did not have a microphone. Everyone said they could hear just fine. Even with all of the noise that comes with the ocean. We did use the Wonderboom for music and it worked really well.

One of my biggest pet peeves is not being able to hear the ceremony. I love ceremonies and I get so disappointed when I can’t hear the officiant and the couple giving their vows. I would say a mic is a must have for any outdoor ceremony, even if the wedding is on the smaller side.

Fortunately my bridesmaid has a karaoke machine that has a mic attached. We tested it in her backyard (our venue) this weekend and it worked really well.

I suggest a mic. You can get one on Amazon for $30, then you can use it for at home Karaoke! Hopefully you have a bluetooth speaker. Most of the ones on amazon are bluetooth compatible.

My dad is a wedding DJ and we have only done a backyard wedding once but it wasn't even a lot of people and we still needed to mic the groom/officiant or the guests wouldn't have been able to hear anyone so I would say yes. I would put a lavalier mic on both the officiant and groom. If the bride and groom face eachother his mic works for both of them.
