Backyard Wedding

Vanessa, on June 25, 2023 at 4:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 5
Hi everyone, my fiancé and I are newly engaged and just started the planning. Like very beginning! My dad had a wonderful idea of having our wedding in the backyard of my childhood home which is really beautiful and special to me. Only problem is the wedding ceremony, cocktail hour and reception would all be in the same area. We have about a quarter acre with a garage taking up part. Any ideas on how to map this out? I’d also like some of the pictures to be in the backyard but where will everyone go? Thank you all!

How many people are you planning on inviting? That would really make a difference in planning the setup.

Backyard weddings are a ton of work. I'd research the size of the property vs the amount of people you're hoping to host. If we had a better idea of the size of the event we could help more.

I don’t think it’s a problem to have it all in one spot! We did everything together. Our ceremony was only a one minute walk from where our cocktail hour and reception were held. Backyard weddings can be really beautiful. It can be more work than an all inclusive venue. But it’s definitely doable. We had our wedding at a completely do it yourself venue.

How big is the property? And how many people are you thinking? That would help us give better advice

The property is roughly a quarter acre. I talked to my sister and she had the idea of cocktail hour being moved to the front while chairs were moved to reception tables and then we could take pictures in the backyard which I think could work. Thank you for your reply. We got about a year and a half till it happens just excited for planning!

What we're trying to ask is how many people are you expecting?

Things to think about include bathrooms, parking, power, weather planning, temperature, flooring, tenting catering needs, licensing and insurance, running water sources, sun protection, seating (who will move the chairs?), lighting for pathways and bathrooms, and many others.

I would suggest looking at planning sources for backyard weddings. They can be beautiful for sure but in many ways more difficult to plan than using a venue set up for the purpose. Good luck and congrats!
