Bad Posture help

Allie, on January 2, 2019 at 5:27 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 15

Anybody struggle with slouching or bad posture? Its always been a struggle for me but really starting to bother me lately. I try to be mindful and make myself sit-up straight when I notice I'm doing it but its a constant struggle. I feel like my back muscles are just too weak. I work at a computer a lot so I'm going to get a stand to raise my computer monitors a bit so that should help some. I've considered back braces and chiropractics. Obviously I could go to the gym and workout but I just don't know what to focus on. Any body have any tips for specific exercises or things that helped you? I don't want to be slouching on my wedding day!

My mom wrote an "S" on her hand for an entire year and it reminded her to sit up straight. I have a back support attachment for my office chair, it helps me not slouch by leaning against it. They also sell posture trainers on Amazon!

What kind of support do you have for your office chair? I was thinking about getting some kind of lumbar support for my car too since I have a long commute.

I have a cloth “brace” I wear at home sometimes that helps me keep straight. It looks like this. It was about $25. I’ve found that exercise helps a lot too!

Work on being concious of your core. Bridges. Bird dogs. Making sure you're engaging when you're walking. If your core is strong it's going to support your trunk more. Maybe see a physical therapist for a visit or two to get some exercises you can do.

I also had to work on my posture. I ended up doing a few sessions with a PT since I was having pain from sitting at the computer two long. It's really a combination of strengthening your back and stretching your pectoral muscles. Instagram and youtube also have videos.

Upright go might be helpful to at least have a cue to sit up straight.

I had terrible posture, and it’s still not perfect, but working out/lifting weights has helped so much! It looks much better than it did. I can’t say exactly what to focus on, but training back and shoulders might be helpful (maybe doing a few upper body days and a leg day?). Deadlifting is great for overall back health and strength.

Sounds like you could use PT! If there’s an Athletico by you, they offer free assessments and will provide you with an exercise program you can do at home. I’d recommend doing pec stretches in a corner, bridges, bird dogs, TA marches, row, lat pull downs. Strengthen the muscles in between the shoulder blades and your core/trunk!

Ballet (yes they have adult class), it really does work miracles for teaching you to stand straight.

I've looked into Upright but couldn't decide if it'd be worth it. I hadn't thought about PT yet. Would it be worth it to see one or should I just check out YouTube?

I'm glad I did a few sessions with a PT. One of my issues was over active traps, so the PT gave me lots of specific suggestions on making sure I am "firing" the correct muscle. Even if you just met with them 2-3 times it would probably be enough to get you on the right track.

Hi! I am a bridal stylist for David’s Bridal. I recognize this is a temporary solution, but I really swear by our undergarments. I linked to my favorite below. I jokingly tell my brides that it garuntwes good pictures, because you literally can’t slouch when you are tucked into one of these. You can go to your local David’s to get sized! Hope this helps❤️

I also am going to suggest a PT. I have been working on this exact issue with mine. It has improved a lot after only a few weeks of work.
