Hello! I was thinking to get a balayage right before my honeymoon. I am going to Maui for my honeymoon so I was hoping to have some nice highlights since I think it'll give me a nice sunkissed look while being on the island Smiley smile. Plus I been wanting to get one for 2 years ( I actually messaged a salon I had previously got a quote from 2 years ago) and decided I would spend the extra money and splurge. After speaking with the hair stylist and letting her know my goal was to get caramel colored highlights she mentioned it may be hard to achieve in just one session but she can do a consultation when I go there. My hair is dark brown (definitely not black but its on the deeper side). I have attached a picture of my hair in outdoor lighting with slight shade. I was wondering if any asians with dark hair have had balayages done and how was your experience with it. I heard for asians our hair tends to turn brassy when lightened and in the past I have self bleached my hairs (tried to do an ombre myself) and after a month or so I noticed it gets brassy/reddish. My natural hair color has some reddish pigments to it as well but isn't noticeable in this photo. I would like to hear balayage experiences and what needs to be done to keep it looking fresh. I've heard of some people using Wella toners but I have no idea how that works or what color to choose lol.

Omg I love how red it is. I noticed on my hair that red washes out so fast though. I tried having red highlights about 2-3 years ago.

Thanks. Yeah, it washes out pretty easily on the parts that aren't as light. I have to use a semi-permanent Wella colour like at least 4-5 weeks. But I wash my hair every other day

Balayage is pretty low maintenance besides toning it yourself. All toner is is a dye so you can save part of it and the developer and not mix it all. I think you'll like it! It'll be there until you slowly cut it off

I wash my hair everyday, so I understand! I just don't feel clean, so it's hard. I combat the constant washing by using shampoos & conditioners for moisturizing my hair, then using hair masks 1 or 2 times a month. I don't blow dry my hair unless I absolutely have to, so I usually let it air dry with a leave in conditioner. Plus I sleep on a silk pillowcase and take biotin w/ collagen. Since I've stopped bleaching my hair it's gotten pretty soft even with washing all the time.

Yes, it is very drying for your hair to be bleached

It is a pretty expensive hairstyle to have as far as upkeep when it comes to coloring your hair and keeping the color from lifting and turning brassy. Make sure you use a good shampoo and conditioner that is made for colored hair and it is best to use cold water so that the color doesn't wash out.

Most of the asian girls I know have that exact hairstyle but they also do go to the salon often for upkeep.

If you like it, keep it. if it is too much upkeep, enjoy it on your honeymoon and then let it go ☺️But I have the feeling because you have wanted it for so long you will enjoy having it and likely keep it for a while. Hope that helps!

A great way to combat brassiness is using a blue or purple color-depositing shampoo. My mom is Asian and has more caramel-y highlights, so she uses a blue shampoo every other wash. My hair is lighter because I'm part-Asian, so I have more ash blonde highlights and use a purple shampoo. If your highlights are more brown, use blue; if they're more blonde, use purple.

My mom uses Joico's Color Balance Blue Shampoo and I use Redken's Color Extend Blondage Color Depositing Shampoo. Like I mentioned, I use it every other wash because sometimes you can use it too often and your hair tints purple! But I wash with regular shampoo, and then I mix some of the purple shampoo with my regular shampoo and spread it over the highlights. These color-depositing shampoos are really concentrated. I leave it in for a minute or two and then wash out. I almost never have to go in for toner with my stylist because I'm never brassy.

I also heavily rely on dry shampoo to keep my hair fresh between washes. I try to wash my hair 2-3 times a week as most to keep the color in.
