Balloons - Tacky?

*Peacock*TheWifey, on May 20, 2011 at 8:28 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 21

Okay... so I've been beating myself up about my centerpieces for a month now. They seem too small. My tables are pretty big - seating 10 - and I'm holding the reception in my college's reception area/conference center. Which is HUGE. The ceiling is way too high to hang anything from without hiring a crew and there isn't much too it. I was batting around having high balloon centerpieces and then have the dancefloor with a balloon canopy to give the room some height and decorations. I still want to get some use out of some of my centerpieces - I want to use the vases and put the balloon weight in there with a teal LED light and cover them up with teal glass marbles. And I'll decorate the top of the vase so it won't look weird. Does that sound okay? I'll post a picture of my reception area and what I'm thinking of doing. My tables will be an offwhite color and the balloons will be the same with some light teal ones scattered in the bunches. Will it be tacky? :-/ It'll be August.

Haha.. Well.. in my defence I'm not having a "normal" wedding.. It's for our children too.. and we're having a somewhat carnival theme.. Soo....

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of those balloons. It reminds me of a birthday party. I know you said you'd have to hire a crew to hang anything, but can you put some twinkle lights up? Twinkle lights twisted with tulle? You could have tall centerpieces made of that dried natural twiggy stuff...?

Have you considered hanging those paper pomanders? It would produce the same effect.

I would def not do a balloon arch on the dance floor.

    Good luck with the decor.

Depending on your theme it might be okay. If you are having a formal wedding I would say no but if you are having an informal wedding with an informal theme then it might be ok.

Yeah it's an informal wedding - Just alot of friends and family and they all know we have a really small budget. The space is just so empty that I need to fill it somehow and I know that Balloons aren't Ideal, but I don't have 1,000 to spend getting someone in to hang stuff from the ceiling... and I may not even be allowed to hang anything. Maybe I should just do an arch over the dancefloor and only have regular centerpieces?

I wouldn't use ballons personally. I like Carole's suggestion to use pomanders if you think something more is needed.

It wouldn't have worked for mine however depending on the theme, I think you can get away with it.........x-nay on the arch tho.....

I am also not a fan of balloons for a wedding reception. If you love them, then it's great. Everyone has their own idea of perfect.

Personally, I do not think that balloons belong at a wedding.

My Step-mom and Dad had balloons at their wedding, just a couple arrangements in the corner kinda thing. I thought they looked good. If they're done right I think it'd be fine, but that's just my opinion.

I'm not a fan of the balloons personally. However, it's your wedding and your budget so do whatever YOU like. Smiley smile

    Carole's suggestion was great.

I also don't like balloons only cuz they remind me of 80s weddings or proms..I love the pomander idea. However, the balloons may be less hassle than making pomanders..and I don't think any of your guests would judge you for having balloons, so do whatever you feel works best for your budget and what you like :-)

Hey its whatever you like but I'm not a fan of balloons at a wedding. At the end of the day its for you and your FH to love so I say go for it, if that's all you can afford!
