Balloons?!?!?

Almost Mrs. Wifey//(*;*)\\, on January 24, 2013 at 6:54 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 35

My reception venue doesnt allow ANYTHING!! I didnt really pay attention to things like that when I signed the contract so now, as I'm trying to figure out decor for the room, I realized this sucks!! I don't know how I feel about balloons at a wedding reception, but I have seen on Pinterest if you put a marble in the balloon before you blow it up, it floats upside down, I don't know if this is true, I have tried a few random things from pinterest and not all things actually did work. Has anyone tried or seen this?! I figure I can blow up alot with no strings and let them cover the ceiling, just don;t want to buy 1000 balloons if it wont work! BTW I have also seen balloons with glow sticks in them on Pinterest, so I bought 200 pink glow sticks and tried, and FAIL. you can barely see the light at all. I need some kind of decor that doesnt need to be hung and I'm out of ideas for sure! Any creative DIY brides out there have any suggestions? Smiley smile

So Wait you can't hang ANYTHING??? Gosh, that's a bummer. But What about lanterns that can sit on the floor? You know those tall metal ones you put candles in? You could have two by the doorway, maybe next to the cake table, smaller versions on tables (not guest tables), on the bar, etc. Also, what about plants? u could decorate with potted trees and it lookes amazing. Bringing the nature inside really changes the atmosphere. You could even add twinkle lights to some of the plants, maybe near the dance floor. You could also do uplighting. Oh and I STRESS USE uplighting. It REALLY gives a completely different look to a room?

Consider getting a company to do pipe and drape. It's actually not that expensive depending on the size of the room. Add some uplighting and you transform a room.

What does your space look like? What does your wedding "look" like? What did you want to hang? Could you do more with table linens and centerpieces to draw attention away from walls and ceilings? Could you give a me a little more information and I can see what I can think of.

Forgive me if everyone knows this stuff already. I am just getting back on WW these days.

I cant hang anything! Smiley sad he even said no to command hooks! It is an old restored hotel. The ceilings a semi low and there are a TON of windows! Which also poses another problem, its very light! I actually did just order 8 uplights from rent my wedding which im super excited about, the hotel is actually a kind of tight space, its beauitful but its an older space so it feels small. Other than centerpieces, i got nothing! Haha. But the idea of bringing in potted plants and string lights is a great idea! Thanks!

Is there a light in the middle of the room? Or anything along the walls? I would try to attach a fishing wire to the light(if there is one) to anything around the room and attach paper lanterns from them. It could have sort of a draping affect....that is if your venue has those things...Good Luck

Also pipe and drape thing sounds interesting, is that something like a company that will build like a wall that stands on its own?? My wedding is definately vintage, the ceremony and reception space are part of a block of historically restored buildings. I love the look of fairy lights and globe lights.

Fishing wire is a great idea, i wonder if he wiuld allow that from his fixtures, he has so many rules. I would be out money if i switched places, not alot but I also reallly love the idea of it I just wish I was able to do more. Plus the ceremony space is owned by the same man and its amazing.i dont think it would work out if I cancelled the reception space but kept the ceremony site.

That balloon thing only works if you are hanging the balloons via string from the ceiling (no helium, just air). They wouldn't still float once something as heavy as a marble is in them, even with helium. That marble technique is if you want to hang (non helium) balloons from the ceiling and have them stay relatively still. But since you can't tape or anything, I doubt that would be something you can do.

And is the ceiling something you want to hide like with ugly ceiling tiles? If not, why cover it? If it has cool features like old pipes or something, it could just add to your rustic decor Smiley smile

Trena B, Thanks for the info, the ceiling is white painted wood, its pretty, I just was trying to think of something to livin it up!! I origionally wanted lanterns or lights strung across it so when i found out i couldnt I thought of the balloon with glow sticks idea but then that didnt work out either. I have seen pictures of ceilings covered in balloons and thought maybe that I could try that! haha, I guess i just want to decorate something!!

Do they have any photos of how others have decorated? Maybe you can get some ideas if they do. Do they have any decorating suggestions?

Why not use the helium balloons and have metallic strings that hang down... Maybe something metallic or shiney at the end of the stings so they sparkle- like small crystals or mirrors?

    My $.02 is.....

Balloons are for bdays. Even cute pics on Pinterest.

    Here is my other $.02.....

If you have a beautiful vintage hall with a pretty white ceiling and gorgeous windows. Don't try to distract, play off of it.

Gorgeous linens, table runners, pretty Centerpieces, candles all over, up lighting around the room, etc just enhance- don't detract.

Vintage buildings have charachter!! Embrace Smiley smile

Now if you saw my little hall - you would understand the need to overhaul but yours sounds very nice!!

We have a very large hall. We decided to create a focal centerpiece in the room. We are renting two roman-style arches, and using them together as an arch for the backdrop for the ceremony. Then for the reception we are putting them into a square, and they will surround the cake.

Don't take away from the room, highlight it. I agree, balloons are for birthdays.

I found a photo and attached it. They are very pretty, and we can decorate them however we want.

Balloons are not made for weddings and i agree with Lisa C. if it has an old feel to it leave it as is, you dont want to distract from the beauty of the place

    I haven't seen a balloon at a wedding since the late 80's.

Like the other posters, I agree you may not HAVE to drape or hang anything. I certainly didn't for mine. I used my ceremony potted plants and had them redistributed throughout my reception.

From what you describe, it doesn't sound like your venue needs a lot of decoration. I'd let the beauty of the place speak for itself.

Very cute pic. But to me, that's for milestone bday, anniversary party, engagement party, showers etc

You should post photos of your venue. It sounds beautiful as-is and we could help more after seeing it.
