Bar service as separate from caterer...

Nora, on July 20, 2021 at 12:37 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 3

So, my fiancee and I are generally trying to keep costs down as much as possible while also not having too many separate vendors to deal with, since neither of us have much experience with party planning and it seems like more moving parts=more things that can go wrong. Our venue doesn't have a liquor license, so whatever we do in terms of alcohol, we need a licensed bartender to serve. The caterer we're leaning toward is pretty simple, and the food price is super reasonable, but then adding bar service, even for just beer and wine, is more than double what we'd be paying for food.

So, okay, the caterer says that if we provide the alcohol, ice and glassware, they can still get their own bartender to serve. Are there services that do all three—alcohol, ice and glassware? Or would we need to get X number of bottles of wine delivered from a liquor store, get ice from like a grocery store or something, and rent glassware from a rentals company? At that point it seems easier to just contract with a separate bartender/bar services company. Anybody have suggestions as to what's simplest?

The more expensive option - direct through caterer - is going to be the easiest. Even if you save money on the purchasing of the actual alcohol, mixers and ice you will have to pay someone to get it to the venue on time. Pay someone to get ice to your wedding on time 😬 sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. I would not expect their bartender to help with more than pouring of drinks as they’ve made that pretty clear. So a little side by side on courrier costs, etc. but I think you should just pay for them to provide everything.

For the exact reasons Cool mentioned we have all of our alcohol coming from our caterer. Our venue includes two bartenders so we didn't need those, but I like knowing that I'm not in charge of figuring out what drinks to get and how much to get, plus they will take back all unopened bottles and I won't have to pay for them, but they're available if we need them. It'll cost more than if we just ordered alcohol from the liquor store down the road from our venue, but it's worth it in my opinion.

I would say you should check around for prices of vendors that do just bar services and see what their pricing is. Saving money is great, but also saving time and headache can be worth the extra cost depending on what the logistics you're looking for are.

Hi Nora! Can your caterers also provide the ice & glassware at an extra cost?? You can order the alcohol in bulk, but it would definitely be helpful if you didn't have to rent glassware and buy ice separately!!

If they can't cover those extra items then I'd look into bar services that do it all!
