Barn Ceiling Draping?

Kim0423, on February 26, 2016 at 1:26 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 9

I was hoping to get some opinions on how we should go about decorating our ceiling at our small barn venue (photo attached). Most people just decorate with a bunch of string lights, which we've already bought, but I'm not sure if we should kick it up a notch. FH was talking about doing draping and it sounds like an awesome idea to me, but not sure how well it would work.

The barn comes with hooks in the ceiling for easy light hanging, but nothing to make the draping easy. Each beam has a hook in the middle and one on the ends. But there is no beam running down the middle that we could drape from. I was thinking I could use small PVC pipes and have it run the length of the room (hung from the hooks) and drape the fabric over the pipe. Should we paint it brown? leave it white? scratch the idea all together?

I would have the pipes the color of the drapery. I would use a shimmer or sparkle tulle draped behind the lights, give a twinkling affect.

I was thinking having the pipes be the color of the draping (white/ivory), but we weren't planning on having it cover the entire ceiling, just about half - sort of like this photo. FH thinks it might look weird to have a white pipe where there is no draping - what do you think?

I think that would work. Gives the room a soft glow and adds to the romantic feel.

Not sure how wide your fabric is, but you may be able to sew on little loops or metal rings that you could attach to the hooks.

Ok so each one has hooks? I would be tempted to run a wire instead of the PVC pipe, easier to blend in and your draping would flow more naturally like the picture you posted. http://www.lowes.com/pd_383311-295-22955951_1z0v13d__?productId=50101642&Ns=p_product_price|0&pl=1

Thanks so much for the wire idea! I think that would work really well (and much easier/cheaper) and more of a natural draping than the pipe. We were thinking about using rope, but I was worried about the rope dipping, but I wouldn't have to worry about that with wire!

I really appreciate the ideas girls Smiley smile

Why would you want to cover that beautiful ceiling with anything? Just my opinion but the barn is all about the wood...I get wanting to string lights up but pvc piping? Fabric? I am dying inside a little Smiley sad

I love the look of draping for barn weddings (I'm having one as well) my venue offers string lights. When I talked to them about draping and started getting into what I would have to do (no one at my venue had ever done it). It took about 10 mins for me to realize I was not going to want to get into all of that. Is it really worth all the effort? The headache? Whose going to set it up the day of your wedding? Will you have time to go in there and make sure it looks okay? What if you want it to look different? Will you have time to sit there while someone is fixing it to make it look the way you are thinking? Or will you be too busy getting ready and taking pictures and dealing with everything else that comes along with the day of your wedding. When I asked myself those questions I realized it wasn't worth it for some draping? Yes I know it does look beautiful but just make sure you think about what you are going to want to be dealing with that day. I'm trying to keep that day stress free (which will be impossible for me!) but trying to keep things as simple for me. Only doing big things like that that my venue will do and the decorations and candles that I will be able to look at quickly and make changes if I need to.

    I found these on etsy.com.

I'm also having a barn wedding and planned on using these if I do anything to the ceiling!
