Barre kicked my butt!

ArtsyAlicia, on June 13, 2017 at 9:02 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 11

I went to my first Pure Barre class last night and survived!

For the first 24 years of my life I was alway stick thin and ate everything and sat on the couch! Well then 24 hit and bam, can't do that anymore! So after putting it off for years, I'm hoping my wedding is good motivation to start getting in shape! The FH and I have been eating super healthy for a few months now and after reading posts from here I decided to try Barre. It was great and I'm not as sore as I thought!

Any suggestions on supplemental activities on the days I don't go to class or muscle recovery after I do? I'm not as sore but still sore lol!!

LOVE barre classes! Personally I prefer barre3 over pure, but there is a pure right down the street from our new house-so that's where my membership is now.

Pure classes are great, BUT they don't get your heartrate up enough--so in addition to barre I either run or do a HIIT workout a couple times a week. Depending on your goals some additional strength training may be helpful. (I usually do 2 or 3 barre classes a week and 2 or 3 cardio sessions and try to do two rest days--usually sundays and wed or Thursdays. for muscle recovery try foam rolling and stretching...

I just recently started going to Pure Barre! It definitely gets better after the first class! On off days, maybe some walking / jogging? Or strength training? Find something else you enjoy so it doesn't feel like a chore.

I tried Barre and didn't like it. I was totally confused by the terminology and lost by what everyone was doing. I like cycle classes.

Even on off days, do something active.

My work-out regimen and background sounds similar to yours! Until my mid-20s, I did little things here and there but nothing was regular. Now I'm trying to make activity a regular part of my life. Even on "rest" days, I still try to go for a 10-15 minute walk or plan my active house work (vacuuming, sweeping the porch and garage) for that day. I figure any little thing is better than doing absolutely nothing that day!

I don't know how big your city is, but during the summer my area has a lot of things like outdoor yoga, concerts in the park, bike cruises downtown. Try doing things like that to switch up your routine!

Love PB! You go girl! It'll kick your butt but it's so worth it. I also run and lift weights for fitness in addition the Pure Barre. The combination gives me that beach bod that I really want.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to start walking every day that I'm not in class and maybe do one rest day. I have a chronic illness so it's so hard to enjoy exercising. I'm hoping that with Barre being low impact it will be something I can sustain. I liked yoga but wasn't getting the muscle toning I was hoping for! I'll have to look into Barre 3 thanks @APZ!

I did a barre/pilates hybrid at a local gym (barre-lates) which upped my heartrate. Its a great workout! But I like rotating between barre/pilates, yoga, running and spinning. Spinning is great for cardio and allover toning.

Another low impact option that will help you build some muscle is doing Pilates on a reformer or TRX Pilates.

Ahhhhh I'm obsessed with FlyBarre! I started going about a month ago and only wish I'd started sooner!

I go 3x a week and supplement with running and FlyWheel spin classes.

Hey! Just seeing that you have a chronic illness...is keeping with a low impact plan best for you? If so--love svetlanas TRX suggestion, and just walking/swimming for cardio. My mom has a lot of chronic disease issues (mostly auto-immune) and she does best with low-impact activities.

Water classes are great for that too.
