Batch Signature Cocktails w/ Consumption Bar

Jordan, on June 9, 2021 at 9:26 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 3

The only bar option our venue offers is a consumption bar. We're expecting ~150 guests for probably a 5 hour reception. I'm incredibly nervous about the bar tab - because I know my friends + guests & we can all put down a good amount of alcohol. 😆

I'm considering having 3 signature cocktails & deciding on a set amount for each ahead of time so they can be premixed to avoid holding up the bar. My question is about the cost associated with doing it this way. Should premixed signature drinks cost as much as a standard mixed drink at the consumption bar, or do you think they would be less expensive because it requires significantly less time from the bartender?

Obviously I know it will depend on the drinks we chose & the cost of the ingredients for them!

My venue is charging me $8 for every liquor drink.

If 1 gallon of premixed cocktails is ~22 servings, would you expect the venue to charge me $176 (22 x $8) for the batch signature drinks, or would you expect it to be less [say, like $132 (22 x $6) because the bartender isn't having to make each cocktail individually?

Would love to hear others thoughts / experiences with this!

This is a question for your venue, but yes I’d assume they charge the same for drinks they make ahead of time and drinks they make during the event. Our venue charged per person for open bar, but if we wanted a signature cocktail added we had to pay extra.

Only your venue can answer that. There is no oversight with consumption bar and the bartenders know that. You have to be very clear with the venue in writing how much they will cost. Bartenders will and do open a new bottle for one drink and you end being for the entire bottle because no oversight. If a different venue is not an option, you have to work with what they do, and possibly be in debt at the end. It’s not right but not enough people complain to the right places for them to change.

You know I keep seeing you say this on every thread about consumption bars and it's really just not true. It's clear her venue is charging PER DRINK, not per bottle. Our couples shower had a consumption bar, and there was the option to pay per drink or bottle, and any open bottles were the hosts to take home at the end of the night (I think it was like one bottle of half poured white wine?). I have been to plenty of events around the country (both corporate and social) with consumption bars and know lots of bartenders and this issue you're talking about just isn't a thing.

There is plenty of oversight with consumption bars; couples are allowed to cut off the tab when it reaches a certain dollar figure or end the bar at the last hour of the reception. There are lots of options. And at PLENTY of weddings, a consumption bar is cheaper than an open bar.

OP, talk to your venue! I'd hope they'd cut you some slack with the batch cocktails, but I'm thinking it's unlikely.
