Beach ceremony - sand or no sand?

AliciaNYC, on February 7, 2017 at 1:04 AM Posted in Planning 0 7

We rented a beach house in Virginia Beach for our ceremony and reception. We can hold the ceremony (about 20 min long) on the actual sand (right in front of the house over a sand dune) or on an outdoor balcony overlooking the beach. The only problem is the balcony is small, so it would be standing room only for our 50 guests. I keep thinking the balcony is better because people won't get sandy and it might be easier to hear the ceremony. But I'm torn because it would be nice to let our guests sit down. Would love your opinions on the better option. The balcony is pictured here. Thanks!

Seats. Definitely seats. I can pretty much guarantee no one wants to stand during the ceremony. If you're worried about sound, get a speaker and a mic. As far as getting sandy, you can let people know that is a beach wedding, and they can dress accordingly. Sand is more tolerable than standing for a ceremony.

I can't see in the pic how wide the beach is. You could have the ceremony closer to the dunes than the water, so guests don't have to walk far and will be able to hear.

Nancy T, the beach is pretty wide, and so are the dunes. Of course dunes shift so who knows how wide it will be in September, but there's plenty of room to hold the ceremony on the beach instead. Thanks for the input everyone! Sounds like on the sand wins. Smiley smile I'll just assign someone to help a few of our elderly guests down to the chairs and back up.

Seats for sure. What's your back-up plan in case of inclement weather?
