Beading on Wedding Dress

Maria, on August 23, 2017 at 9:33 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

So as you can see in the picture of my dress below, the top of it has a lot of intricate beading. I did notice it feeling a little scratchy on my underarms during my two alteration appointments, but didn't think much of it because it wasn't annoying or anything.

However, I didn't take in account the entire wedding night. It's probably safe to say that I will get some red irritation on my underarms before the night is over. I'm kicking myself for not thinking about this possibility BEFORE taking my dress to the seamstress the second time. She currently has it and is doing the last minor adjustments here soon.

Is it worth calling the seamstress to see if I can remove some of the beading to help? I'm not sure if the dress will look odd with some beading missing though. Any other suggestions? I don't want to sound like I have dress regret. I absolutely adore it! I just wish I thought of this a sooner. Worse case scenario, I'll tough it out haha.

Sorry that I don't have a close-up picture of the top of the dress! I don't have pictures of me wearing it on my phone because I didn't want to risk my FH seeing it lol. I'll check with my mom today and see if she has any saved on her phone.

I don't have a helpful response but definitely want to follow along to see what the responses are since I'm having the same problem. I haven't had a fitting yet but truthfully I hoped I would be too busy focusing on other things on my day to worry about the irritation. Now that I read your post though, that's probably a terrible plan.

A friend of mine got married and poor girl had beading under the arms. She looked like a chicken in the later hours of the night, walking around with her arms bent like chicken wings so that she didnt accidentally rub them on the dress. They were red and very painful.

Definitely ask your seamstress to remove some beading. If it bothers you a bit when trying it on, it will be torture after hour 5 of wearing it. A good seamstress can make it look like it was designed to look that way. I doubt other people will notice you had beading removed from the armpit area.

I would definitely give your seamstress a call and see if she can do anything for you. Having danced my whole life ive had some pretty awful costumes with sequins and such around that area and even after just 10 minutes of wearing them my arms are irritated and red. I couldn't imagine what they would look like after 6 plus hours. Im sure your seamstress can make it look like its a part of the design of the dress. You deserve to be comfortable for your wedding!

Definitely ask if they can remove some beading under your arms! You don't want to be itching and dying to get out of your dress.

Def give her a call. You should no suffer for hours. Maybe there is something that she can change without altering the look. Good luck.

You can also use body glide on your arms. It works like a charm, also works on chub rub Smiley winking

@el10717, haha right? It literally just came to mind this morning. "Wait...I have to wear it all night." lol. With the wedding being in a little over a month away, I wish I thought of this like, way sooner. But better I thought of it now than the night of the wedding??

And to everyone who has commented, thank you for your suggestions of contacting the seamstress. I didn't want to put more work on her this close to the wedding. However, when I met with her a couple weeks ago, she told me that she had last-minute August brides rushing in for their alterations. Soooo better a month's notice than a week or two? I do have sensitive skin. I'll give her a call this afternoon when I get the chance.

@Hailey, I've never used Body Glide before but I've heard of it. I wasn't sure if spreading something on my arms would get all over the dress and stain it though. Course if it's clear maybe it won't, I'm not sure!

I asked a similar question a few weeks ago and someone told me to have the seamstress put a little tulle over it!

I have beading under my arms but it doesn't bother me as much. Now I'm thinking maybe after a few hours it might. I'll have to see if they can remove some myself I wasn't even thinking this

@andrea, I wasn't sure if it would or wouldn't. So then I decided it's probably safe to assume that it will become irritating and I'd rather do something about it lol. It's just one of those things where I was at work doing my thing and the thought just dawned on me, just like that.

@Susan, hmm that could be an option as well. It's hard for me to envision, but then again that's what the seamstress is for, right? Haha.

I believe there are solutions to the problem besides removing beading. I think there is a protective solution they can put onto it to make it not as itchy. I'd also ask for their advice, I'm sure they've seen it many times.

I'm sure you've got enough time to get it just right. If it makes you feel any better, 23 days before the wedding I went to pick up my dress and the seamstress purposely made it too small and told me to lose weight bc I have "all of August to lose 3-5 lbs". I said f- you and took it back and made her fix it in two days. Picked it up today. My wedding is in 10 days. So you hopefully have plenty of time!

Mine suggested clear beeswax where it rubs (put directly on the beading)

I've heard people put clear nail polish on the beads.

Get body glide and put it on your arms in the areas that may rub. I had a shit ton of beading and I was great all day every after sweating to death at first look and pictures. Use that shit on chub rub too!

She can remove some of the beading or add a little bit of fabric to help with the irritation

@mel WOW screw her!! My blood would be boiling if I went through the same thing. That is totally uncalled for. I'm glad to hear you put her in her place.

@FromAtoB, I think I'll buy some of that as well. I didn't get the chance to call the seamstress yesterday (got super busy) so I'll try today. Maybe I'll do both things just to be on the super safe side.
