Bed and Breakfast

Cristina, on July 27, 2020 at 10:43 AM Posted in Married Life 0 9
Are bed and breakfasts still popular? (Like actual BnBs that’s serve breakfast and other amenities, not like AirBnB.) After seeing all of our plans for the year constantly cancelled or postponed, my fiancé and I are in need of a weekend getaway to just relax. Neither of us have stayed in a true BnB, but it may be interesting to consider. We are in our late 20s (28/29) and I wasn’t sure if they are usually targeted towards an older crowd? (I’m sorry if this sounds rude, I don’t intend to be. I just want to see if it’s something we’d be interested in and don’t want to feel out of place if there’s not normally young couples who go.) Thanks in advance!

Prior to the pandemic they definitely still existed. B&Bs have been our favorite stays for over 30 years. Some of the best ones we've stayed in tend to be in affluent resort cities (Monterey and Santa Barbara, CA; Cape May, NJ, etc.). If you're near CA, I highly recommend The Jabberwock Inn in Monterey and The Simpson House Inn in Santa Barbara. Both are gorgeous old restored homes. We've met tons of interesting people in B&Bs and especially enjoy those that build in some kind of social hour for their guests in the late afternoon -- it's just enough time to meet over beverages, have interesting conversations, and share ideas about things to see and do, but then everyone goes about their evening plans. In New England, I highly recommend the Kingsley Grist Mill in Clarendon, VT. It's an Airbnb, but the owners live on-site and are fascinating characters. The property is amazing. Don't be afraid to try B&Bs! Smiley heart

Prior to planning our now beach wedding, we initially planned to rent out an entire B&B in Maine on the coast. We had worked out a great deal with the owner for the entire place and reception. If we could've kept our wedding to less than 20 people, I definitely would've gone that route.

I love staying in BnB's! You and I are around the same age, and though the overall crowd is typically older, we still always enjoy it. The rooms are usually really pretty and the food is amazing. I also enjoy the afternoon wine and cheese platters they (usually) do. I am not sure how they are operating now with Covid, but I have always had great experiences.

I have always loved B&Bs. They are comfortable and someone makes you breakfast. If location and money aren’t an issue I prefer them to hotels.

I am another fan of B&Bs, even being younger than the average age of typical guest. But I can't imagine feeling comfortable sharing a breakfast table with strangers during a pandemic.

I agree about this concern, but we've been to many B&Bs that provide options for a more private breakfast. At The Simpson House for example, even pre-Covid, they offered breakfast in your guest room and/or on a private patio, so I'd definitely encourage the OP to just ask a lot of questions about how/what services are currently being offered.

That's good. I definitely hope B&Bs are adapting so that they can stay in business!

Yes the pandemic is certainly a concern! One of the BnBs we’re considering actually offers private breakfast or even delivery to your room. So while it may not be as personable as during “normal life”, it still offers the quaint and cozy feel of a BnB.
