Hi! I’ve worked with a pageant artist and I’ve straight Asian hair. She recommended Sebastian Shaper hairspray to prep hair and Sebastian Shaper Plus to set. At Sally’s they have the generic version. Spray the Shaper first, curl hair (15-20 secs) hold the curl for another couple seconds to extend curl, and then spray Shaper plus to set. Day old hair works best because it has some grit. Been doing this for over a decade.

The woman who has cut my hair for years suggested using a shampoo, conditioner and mousse to prep hair. Air drying can help for some hair types. If you can’t use day-old hair, adding some dry shampoo helps to give the curling iron something to grip. And then a good curl holding hairspray like mentioned above. Setting the curls in curlers can help for some stubborn hair. Products to avoid: leave in conditioner and any hair oils, they make the hair too slippery.


It could be helpful for them to practice a couple times to see what strategy works best for them. Nothing is worse than starting to curl and having it fall flat or run out of time to finish. 😅 Consider having a backup style incase they don’t want to or are not confident in creating and keeping the curls all night long.
