Best Ink for Fingerprint Guestbook

Courtney, on March 19, 2016 at 6:57 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 18

I've been looking online and haven't been able to find solid advice on this one...we're having our wedding at a vineyard so our guestbook will be a grapevine thumbprint guestbook (our guests' thumbprints will be the grapes - I'm super excited about it!). We'll be using purple ink for the grape thumbprints and I'm thinking about providing Purell for people to clean their fingers afterward for a quick clean up. My question is what ink brand/type works the best for something like this (fast drying, won't smudge, washes off hands easily)? And do you think the Purell is a good choice/do you have another suggestion? Thanks for your help! Smiley smile

I'd also consider baby wipes to help clean up the ink.

Can't help you on the ink.

@Kristina yes! I have definitely considered baby wipes as well but the reason I'm leaning towards Purell is because there would be nowhere to put the baby wipes after they're done wiping off their hands...

I'm not sure if it would work, but don't banks use something that only shows up on the paper?

@Kelly like invisible ink-ish that only works on paper (that reminds me of the Crayola Wonder Markers that only work on special paper lol)...not sure if they'd have it in purple ink, though!

Just look for an ink pad this is labeled "washable". They are pretty common in craft stores like Michael's. Could you put out a small trash barrel for people to through out the baby wipes that some have suggested? I'm not sure that just Purell would do the trick. Honestly, as a guest I would be inclined to skip it if there was nothing to really clean my hands off after because I'd be afraid to get ink on my clothes and wouldn't want to have a big ink spot on my hands all night.

@Rebecca yes we could definitely do that! That's what I was worried about because I know I would definitely be annoyed having a purple finger all night! haha I just didn't know if it'd be weird having a trash can right next to the guest book...thoughts?

Just get a mini-trash can and spray it to match your colors/theme. You could add glitter, flowers, etc.

Grab a pad at Michael's and try it out. Have a trash can. More people care about tossing their baby wipes than some visual scheme. Also, I've never seen a guest print done as a vine rather than a tree, so that's cool.

I think it you have a package of wipes then it would be obvious that was what the trash can was for. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Yeah baby wipes will be better than Purell, that won't take the ink off. Your venue should be able to supply a garbage for you.

If the ink comes off their fingers easily, that means it'll probably smudge off the canvas easily too.

But I like the baby wipe idea. Those suckers can clean anything! I don't think it'll hurt to have a small wastebasket under the table

Please please have baby wipes. You dont even have to use a real trash can a cute box that has a couple "dummy" wipes in it would be good.

I use washable ink at work and as long as you give it time to dry it wont smudge.

Seems like baby wipes for cleanup is the consensus (I never realized they'd be this effective lol)! I'm planning on having a cute little sign next to the guest book explaining what to do, so I'll just include the wipes for cleanup/throwing them away in the explanation!

@Heather I like the idea of putting a small trash can under the table so it's out of the way!

@Beka any specific ink brand recommendations?

    Thanks again ladies! Smiley smile

@spring 2017 wedding I actually made a post about a test run that I did back in April. We decided to go with Color Box pigment ink (brighter, cleans up better) and wipes to get the ink off of fingers. We'll have a small trash can to throw out the wipes next to the guest book table. Here's the link to my other post about the test run I did. Hope it helps! Smiley smile
