Best Lady: bouquet or boutonnière?

Elizabeth, on August 29, 2018 at 11:41 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
Hey all,

This weekend I am visiting the florist to talk about our silk flowers. Instead of having a best man, we are having a best lady. Now, should she have a bouquet of flowers like the rest of the girls or should she wear a boutonnière? She is wearing a dress like the bridesmaids but is wearing dark gray, which is what the groomsmen are wearing. Anyone else have a best lady?

We had a groomswoman and did a pin corsage for her. It was slightly fancier than the boutonierres the men wore.

First of all women rarely wear a boutonniere. A boutonniere (also known as a buttonhole) is worn on the lapel of a jacket. Look at a suit jacket. Along the top of the left lapel there is a buttonhole stitched in, although rarely cut through these days. Traditionally, a boutonniere was a single flower, carnation or rose typically, worn in that buttonhole. Suits frequently had a small loop on the backside of the lapel to anchor the flower, or a small pin could be used as well.

With that tad of haberdashery history tackled 😁, let's get to your question what flowers should you get for the Best Woman? If she is wearing a suit pop a boutonniere on her and call it a day. If she's not wearing an suit but rather a dress or other dressy outfit, your usual options are a bouquet to match the other women in the bridal party, or a corsage. A corsage is constructed differently from a boutonniere, and can be designed to pin onto the outfit or a wristlet can be added and it worn on the wrist.

With all that said, my answer to your question is, ask her what she would prefer a bouquet or corsage, and if a corsage what type.

We have a grooms woman and we’re planning to do a corsage as well. I thought she might feel out of place if none of the other grooms people are holding anything and she had to hold a bouquet.
