Best MOH speech? Are you (or did you) having (or have) one?

Chelsea, on August 6, 2009 at 1:25 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 14

I am my best friends' MOH and she is gettimng married this weekend 8/8/09! Months ago I started thinking about the MOH speech and after some research said you shouldn't start till a few weeks before, I forgot all about it (completely by accident....I swear!) in all the wedding hectic/crazyness until THIS MORNING.

What have your favorite speeches been and do you have any advice? I'm now so time crunched I can't seem to think straight! I love my best friend and she has waited 10 long years for this day! I want this to be a special speech that will make her (& her guests) laugh AND cry! Any tips??

I didn't have an official MOH but I had a friend who asked if she could do a speech. My DJ joked with me that MOH's usually have the worst speeches! He said they are usually bad because they are not toasts to the bride and groom but more just the girl sobbing and saying how much she loves them and is happy for them. Everyone loved the speech my friend gave for us because she talked about what we are like as a couple and it was so sweet. The speeches I've seen at weddings I can tell you the worst things you can do is ramble on WAY too long or talk about too many "inside jokes" that leave the audience out. Speak from the heart and you'll do great!

Try looking up quotes. You'd be surprised how much comes to you from other peoples words. It's a great way to get the gears turning.

From the few that I have been to the best ones were short. People looked like zombies after the one that was 15min long. Maybe pick a few points to stick to, memorize those and just wing it hitting on those points (you dont want to sound like your reading a school paper) and the best MOH speach I ever heard was from my best friends twin sister. She explained how bad she was at giving speaches and how she had spent the last few weeks looking up MOH speaches online. She then proceded to say "ok, so the first one said..." and read a piece from one online then added a funny little personal something. Then she said "so then I was stuck again.. until I found this one. (big smile)" and quoted the second example with a few more personal bits. Everyone found her speach cute, kinda funny and perfect. And being a twin she had to point out that my friend was still not the better half. Everyone laughed at that. Have fun with it.

Yeah if it's not REALLY funny, then it should be really short. I love the funny speeches, usually they poke a little fun at the bride and groom...or tell a funny story about the person that everyone might not know. Speak from the heart!

I think the best man speech is supposed to be funny and the maid of honor speech should be from the heart. My favorite ones are when the maid of honor talks about how special the bride is to her, maybe tell a cute story and then ends by tying in how the groom has now made the brides life special. Almost like you are passing her over to her new husband.

THANK YOU EVERYONE! Both for the suggestions and the vote of confidence. I think I can speak pretty well from the heart and do well. Since we've known each other and been friends since the 'awkward' 12/13 year old years until now I think it will come off sentimental but fun.

Thanks again! You all are great!

The best one I heard from a bridesmaid share a few short stories about the bride that demonstrated her character, talked about watching their relationship grow, how they complimented each other and then threw in a little baseball inuendo about 'getting to run all the bases on the honeymoon' since the groom enjoyed baseball.

The speech I gave included stories about the bride, things I love about her, then watching their love grow, and then asking the groom to do manly things like taking out the trash and opening jelly jars. Everyone seemed to think it was very cute...course I'm sure they wouldn't have told me if they'd hated it.

For my fredinwedding i actually wrote a poem so i had some kind of sturcture. here it si

For those of you that don’t know what it’s like to grow up in a town of a thousand, there’s not a whole lot to do. Whatever you do you do with your friends 365 days of the year. We have known Tara for so long that there are too many stories and too much material for us to cover in one speech. So we decided to write a quick poem and share some of the things we have gone through and maybe offer some words of advice to help Paulo over his 28 plus years with her.

We all grew up in a small town

And if there’s one thing we know Tara tends to fall down

From falling on ice, or off trampolines

To tripping on desks she always makes a scene

Tara has really been through a lot

Your mess of an 18th birthday is still a sore spot

From learning to drink, Oh what a sight

To cruising the streets all hours of the night

She worked at the theatres through her high school years

Not getting enough sleep was one of her fears

Memorization is a skill that ensures she won’t forget

Every birthday of every acquaintance she’s met

These are the rules Paulo should take from this poem

Always walk behind her when you’re away from home

To ensure any falls that may be

    Are caught and diverted immediately

The next rule we have is never forget

Her birthday, your anniversary, or the moment you met

We hope she gives you as many laughs as we’ve had

Just try really hard not to make her mad

Tara has always been known to make us laugh till it hurt

From one of a kind dates, oh what a flirt

Thank God she’s met Paulo, the best date of all

Cheers to Tara. We know you’ve made the right call

    I used this site previously which helped me with ideas for inspiration;

    http://newsv4.com/maid-of-honor-speeches

I think the rule is to not over-do the length whilst keeping it funny yet touching at the same time, not always that easy I know!
