Best ring for blue collar worker

Meet_The_Clarks, on February 23, 2018 at 10:45 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 24

My FH is a railroad conductor and often times is wrist deep in train oil/grease. He also has to constantly jump up and down off the train cars, which would mean constant banging of the ring. We got him a fancy ring (white gold) that he can wear on nice occasions, holidays, anniversaries, etc. He also has a titanium one (black), but idk if that one is okay to wear to work. However, I am wondering what brand/type would be best for someone that works with their hands and gets super dirty. I was thinking silicone?? If your spouse/future spouse works with their hands, what ring did you buy or plan to buy? I'm open to any and all suggestions. Price doesn't necessarily matter right now since we are just looking.

I've heard tungsten is great. Thats what we're looking into, they're not too expensive. But if something happens and it needs to be taken off in an emergency in believe it needs special cutters.

I would stay away from platinum. When I went to get my ring resized the jeweler told me that platinum has a tendency to get very slippery when it makes contact with salt water so that I should always take my ring off before I go swimming.

I would recommend going to a few different jewelers and talk to them about your concerns. Small jewelers though, if you can find a few yelp reviews on them that would be good too.

My FH is in construction and we agreed it is not a good idea for him to wear his ring during work. So he will only wear his ring when he isn't working.

We will be going with a silicone band for FH to wear at work. He has heard waaay too many stories about people losing or seriously damaging their fingers after a ring got caught in something. We will also be getting him a nice band to wear on the weekends/ when we go out.

My FH is an EMT and has a qalo ring, its really good quality and looks really nice for being rubber. He feels more comfortable wearing this to work. He also has a plain gold band he wears for special occasions.

My fiancé is a firefighter and is dead set against wearing his ring to work and I understand, he sees the other guys get deflected constantly ( their glove will get ripped off and the ring goes with it tearing a lot of the finger with it )... he also has had to cut a ton of rings off people on calls and said that tungsten is pretty impossible to cut off unless the department is equipped with special equipment and not every department is. He always tells me that 18kt or 24kt gold is easiest to cut threw since it’s so soft .. his ring is yellow gold but I will try to convince him to wear a silicone one while he’s working lol

Yes! So much yes! I am a jeweler and I tell people all the time that if they work with their hands to avoid alternative metals. They may be cheaper but they can literally cost you a finger in an emergency. Try silicone rings because they can easily slide off. Soft gold works well too but in the case of burns they can actually bond with burnt skin and become impossible to remove.

My fiancee is also a train conductor/engineer and the company he works for does not allow for any jewelry to be worn at all, and even if they were allowed to wear jewelry that there is no way he would wear any, that there are to many risks. If you haven't already I would double check with your yard/company and make sure they allow any rings to be worn before you spend the money on two sets. I got my fiancee a nice stainless steel band and he will wear it when he isn't working and when he is off work. Good luck to you Smiley smile

FH and I both plan to get silicone rings for work and a nice ring for other occasions. He is in the military and I’m an OR nurse, so the silicone seem like our best option for everyday wear. I’ve also had to cut rings off people in an emergency and I’d recommend against the metals that are extremely difficult to cut.

I believe with tungsten, it can be shattered easier than cut. It is very hard, but brittle, and in an emergency they can shatter it without damaging the hand IF they are very careful.

    However, silicone is definitely safer.

You don't get to just shatter tungsten with a hammer. You need a specific tool because there are only three weak spots on a tungsten ring and no one knows where they are until they're whacked. Tungsten is a horrible metal for jewelry due to safety reasons.

My FH works in construction and we decided that he will either not wear a ring at all at work, or a silicone band. I am so worried that he will smash his finger with his ring on and possibly lose his finger. Not worth the risk for me.

Thank you for the awesome feedback! I do know he is permitted to wear a ring. That's why I was thinking silicone- nice material and ok if it gets dirty.

We are looking into tungsten too, but he will be wearing his only when not at work - he suggested to wear in a necklace when he's at work because it's hazardous in his job (he is an electrician) so we will see. Some people get a silicone one when at work for safety reasons and to not damage the actual ring. I wear my silicone one to go to the gym for example, and I like it.

Silicone band for work! Sometimes I think about getting one because I work with my hands and spend a lot of time restraining thrashing animals...

FH works with his hands and we'll likely just buy him some inexpensive silicone rings or he'll go to work without it. When we ordered our bands they told us they didn't recommend tungsten as in an emergency it can't be cut off, but has to be smashed off. I wouldn't be willing to risk him losing a finger over that.
