best vs worst wedding food

Michelle, on March 13, 2022 at 5:09 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15
From weddings you have attended, what food stood out as being the best ever? Are you planning to serve that or something similar at your own wedding? What was the worst you had?

Because people say “wedding food is always horrible and no one wants to it even you try to make sure it’s good but it’s required either way”. I’ve never understood that logic because why would you serve mediocre or bad food instead of finding something awesome from a local restaurant you love? If the wedding caterer’s offerings are that bad, go elsewhere.

The worst wedding food I had was an inedible piece of steak with bland veggies. No one at the table finished it. (The vegetarian dish at that wedding was amazing, though, and we passed around a couple of the plates so everyone could get a little something).

The best food I’ve had at a wedding was a duo plate that had a paper wrapped fish filet. It was like butter. The most amazing wedding food I’ve ever eaten.

I can’t think of bad food I’ve had but I’m offering a buffet at mine to give a variety of options for people

The best food I had at a wedding was a fresh cut prime rib station. It was so good and all the sides were amazing too. I don't remember any catered wedding that didn't have good food. I have been to a couple weddings where the family or church community made the food and it wasn't great. But I've also had the most amazing, authentic Tex Mex at a wedding where family made the food too.

Well, I’ve only been to one wedding (besides one when I was a kid- didn’t go to the reception). I had some of their appetizers maybe? I honestly don’t remember what they had quite to be honest. I think it was just appetizers served by caterers. If they had meals, I don’t remember.
I definitely want a charcuterie station with organic vegetables. And maybe some ravioli for food. Fiancé and I talked about pizza lol. We haven’t really decided.

I have no idea what “wedding food is always horrible and no one wants to it even you try to make sure it’s good but it’s required either way” is supposed to mean.

The best food I ever had at a wedding (that wasn’t mine!) was at a cocktail hour at a lovely waterside venue just north of NYC. Tons of passed apps and live action stations. It was mostly elevated America classics, but also stir fry stations, a sushi roller, tacos made to order, etc. It was all fantastic and I was pretty full for dinner!

The worst was a buffet at a fancy yacht club. The caterer was supposed to be the best in the area, but pretty much everything was bland and mushy. Some of the passed apps at cocktail hour were okay, but they ran out of pretty much everything about 20 minutes in.

Worst wedding food I’ve had has consistently been BBQ buffets. For some reason they are just never good. It seems they always use cheap fatty meat because they think they can get away with it by just drowning it in BBQ sauce. And the veggies always tend be bland (like just dumped out of cans and shoved over a warmer). We don’t even attend receptions with BBQ buffets any more.

We’ve had a lot of great wedding food though! We aren’t serving anything we’ve seen at a wedding though- we are having a destination wedding and want to serve popular local cuisine. Hopefully we will be one of those weddings with great food, because we really want to take care of our guests and give them a great experience! 🤞🏻

Most of the weddings I go to (including our own coming up) use kosher caterers. There's always a handful of religious guests who will refuse to attend or just lose their minds with guilt if they find out the food isn't kosher. This does limit things, as there are only about three good kosher caterers in the area and they only work on certain dates. So while "a local restaurant you love" isn't an option for our crowd, these caterers do take their food seriously. They have religious laws about using fresh ingredients, so I've never had bad wedding food. Most kosher weddings have a meat menu, but my favorite was actually a dairy wedding with a giant sushi station. I also enjoyed when my cousin used our late grandmother's bread recipe at her wedding. I'm a rather picky eater myself, so if they serve something I can eat, I'll be happy.

I cant remember any wedding food that was amazing or horrible but I do remember the first wedding I was a bridesmaid in they did a potluck with all the guests bringing food which was fine. What wasnt fine was the fact that all the guests ate before we even finished taking pictures and the couple and wedding party only got cold leftovers.

I've never had bad or horrible wedding food, and would not judge a couple by their choices, (unless they're charging their guests).

Fortunately I haven't attended any weddings with truly awful food, but I think my least favorite has been a BBQ buffet (superrrr popular in our area). The couple's all-inclusive (catering, cake, decor, planning) venue filed for bankruptcy 2 weeks before their wedding and cancelled all booked events without a refund, so they definitely got a pass for the food as they were honestly lucky to have gotten a new caterer at all with such short notice!

The best food? We attended a small wedding hosted for a friend of ours by some wealthy family friends. Their go-to events caterer offered passed hors d'oeuvres and while they were small, they were all so. stinking. good. And a different cousin had a wood-fired pizza food truck come to their reception, with all the sides and desserts made by his SIL (disclaimer: her job is actually catering so it was kind of cheating 😂). Also so good!

For ours, we're having our destination reception at a local restaurant in their private dining room. The reviews seem to be great and the views are stunning, so we're excited about it!

I agree. BBQ buffets at a wedding are a terrible idea. Even if the food is good, I don't want to eat BBQ in formalwear.

I think the assumption is just that since caterers are making food in bulk for however many people, flavor and quality might be sacrificed for efficiency in order to make sure everyone has something. That being said, the only really bad meal I've ever had at a wedding was when I specifically requested no nuts on my dinner due to a food allergy that could be potentially fatal, I was assured it would be no problem to make a plate that way, but it came out with nuts on it anyways. I hate sending food back, but I'd rather not be carted out on a stretcher in the middle of someone's big day. When they brought my plate back it was pretty obvious they just picked off the nuts, so I ended up just eating bread and salad for dinner.

Most memorable was squid ink pasta i had at a wedding a few years ago. i would not say it was bad or good, it was ok flavor wise but it was memorable because that was really unique.

Most weddings I've been to have had great food. My least favorite was one where the caterer was 2 hours late (apparently they 'forgot' about the wedding). Everyone was starving and a bunch of people drinking on an empty stomach led to people getting drunk fast. When the caterer did arrive, all the food at the buffet was cold and all the food was really similar (no variety).
