Black BM dresses = superstition?

Charlotte, on November 26, 2009 at 9:34 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 16

My grandmother seems to think that black BM dresses have some sort of bad superstition with them and is against me using black dresses. Yes, I know. This is OUR day I get that, is there really a superstition of BM wearing black dresses?

Not that I know of. I do know that until recently black was reserved specifically for mourning, and to show up to a wedding in black was to symbolize your sorrow for the union. Now, it is just considered a formal color - to show up in bright red or in white or off white is still considered off putting, though.

Personally, I LOVE black BM gowns. When done right, whether long or short, they can be stunning. I have never heard of any superstition, but I have never been one to believe in those. It's your day, so make your decision based upon what you like, the girls shapes, & what is appropriate for your wedding.

A lot of people wear black for a wedding day, including guests and bridal party. It is more common than you think. I think black is a beautiful color, it's very simple and it's very elegant. You can add a touch of any color to make it even more beautiful.

I do not believe in any superstition either, so it is entirely up to you, it is your day after all. You might regret later not to go with your ideas.. I understand that you want to respect your grandma's wishes, but when all is said and done, will you be happy?

Not really, Just tell your grandma that black isn't a 'morbid' color for weddings and is very commmon. I also wanted black BM dresses, but my colors are Chocolate brown and champagne, and after I looked at chocolate brown BM dresses, I liked it better than black (that and every wedding in our town this past year and next is doing black BM dresses)

I have never heard of such a superstition and know a LOT of people who have used black. I mean, often the guys are wearing black tuxedos, why is a black bridesmaid dress any different?!

I'm doing black as well, and after going to the salon today, I can safely say they wouldn't offer so many dresses in black if people weren't getting them.

I remember many years ago wearing a black dress to a friends wedding and having the older ladies seem to think it was bad luck or a statement that the marriage wouldnt last. Well, that couple just celebrated their 20th anniversary! Now I have brides who wear black lace over white wedding gowns!

It is chic and elegant and I have never known anyone who had a mishap when looking so good, LOL

It may be a cultural thing, but No real superstitions exist that I have heard of. Have fun and use gorgeous flowers with those black dresses. My favorite Hot pink Roses or Geberas with black centers.

I think it's okay too. I've seen a lot of pics lately where the wedding party is wearing black and I think it looks so classy and elegant!

Our wedding theme is black-tie and colors are black and white. Our bridesmaids are wearing black tea-length dresses. I'm not aware of any superstition for bridesmaids in black. Hope everything works out!

My BM's are wearing black and having a blue sash added. I don't think there is anything wrong with it..Go for it as long as your BM's feel comfortable and you like the dresses then that is all that matters.

Black became a very popular color for a formal wedding. I had a lot of clients over the past 5-7 years whose bridal parties were dressed in black. It's a beautiful fashion statement. Go for it!
