Black Natural Women: when and how do you decide about hair for the wedding?

April, on June 21, 2019 at 7:58 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 13
For black women who are natural: how far in advance do you decide what your hair is going to be like for the wedding? Personally I'm not sure when to. I recently got a big chop, that could be a possibility, my wedding is in winter and that's usually the time I put my hair in protective styles like crochet or braids, and honeymoon may follow immediately after the wedding (in the Caribbean) so braids or keeping natural might be the better option. How far in advance do you decide? Do you do a hair trial, if so, when? And if I were to get braids or crochet how many days before the wedding should I get them in? There's very few resources on this, I'm hoping the black community on wedding wire can help.

I think this varies regarding when to decide. I’m sure some decide far in advance some maybe the day before the wedding lol. I had plans to do my hair in a bun but later said you know what I want to chop all of my hair off and wear it in a kid of wash and go. I have been saying I wanted to cut my hair for a long time and FH has been egging me on so thought it would be a nice surprise. I googled hairstyles and picked one. I’ll be trying it out this weekend. As far as the braids I would say two-three days before the wedding. You need time for it to loosen up. Don’t want pain or a headache or lack of sleep the day before your wedding.

My hair is relaxed and for my wedding day my hairdresser did beautiful spiral curls.

Hey April, I'm natural but I have sisterlocks. All I know is that I want my hair up for the big day so I'm not sure when I'll know exactly how I want it. I'm following your post for hair inspiration ❤❤❤

Which type of curls or coils do you have? I started thinking about it 3 weeks before (we are getting married on Tuesday). I will do my own hair.. wash and go with flaxseed gel (see photo). I knew I didn't want an updo so it was a matter of picking to wear it as normal or do half up half down.

So maybe I am not so helpful given what you want to do. I think though if you could get it done as close to the day as possible that might be better. Perhaps 2 days? Last time I braided my hair, it got frayed quickly. Frizz and sleeping on it. As other PP said, it probably is a good idea not to do it the day before as you will want some time for your scalp to get used to the style.

My hair is 4b, cut really short now. It would be a nightmare if me or my mom did my hair for the day, even when I do wash and go I don't think I get the consistency of gel, oil, and cream just right.

I have 4B hair as well and I’m actually trying out extensions for my wedding! My hair is about an inch past shoulder length when straightened but my ceremony is outside and with the way Tennessee humidity is set up, I don’t want to risk it not holding all day. I’m going to my stylist for a sew in style in July to see how I like wearing them!

Ok, so it seems like you'll get yours in 6 weeks - 2 months before as a trial and then hopefully it all works out because you'll get the same type of weave for the wedding day. Probably a couple days before like others said so it won't feel tight. So in my case, if I were to go with crochet, weave, or braids I'd do the same thing and get something in around after Thanksgiving as a trial. My wedding day is end of January. Otherwise if I decide to go with a natural style, I have more time to decide, I'm just having trouble finding a good resource of inspiration for twa bridal looks.

I'm wearing my hair short with color. That's the only thing I hadn't decided yet.

If you did the Big Chop I think you should wear it in its naturally curly pattern. You could add some hair accessory's but honestly I like the Natural Afro with the beautiful earrings to make things look extra cute. Also, this allows the freedom on the honeymoon to swim and not worry about your hair. You could also hire a makeup artist to ensure the make up is just right for the natural afro look. I have seen some photos and they are beautiful. DO NATURAL, let your family see the natural beauty he fell n love with

Fellow Natural Here! Its still a decision I am wrestling with. Our wedding is in September. I really like the look of half up-half down with a braided crown, but I know my curls will frizz in the heat. SO I order some similar texture clip ins that I will wear for my wedding day. I'm doing my own hair probably. Smiley laugh

Seeing as I'm ~that~ girl who can't braid her hair to save her life, I'm either doing an afro or twist out.

I am looking at styles now. My regular stylist also does weddings so she already knows my hair well. I had a protective styles for 2.5 years to do my transition from relaxed to natural. I did the curly weave and loved it! Last December I came out of the weave and went to a ponytail style which I continue to this moment. By the way I went to Jamaica right after and that ponytail was a lifesaver!! On a daily basis, I put the ponytail into a bun. It's so classic, chic, and easy to maintain. Twice this year I did a silk press and also loved that as it gave me the relaxed look and I did a length check while it was straight. So you can see my hair has been through various texture versions. I have loved all my style staples so far but I honestly am leaning towards the bun style for my event. I wear a low bun daily so to change it up I am looking at a high bun. I have enough natural hair now that I can do the high bun without clip ins or extensions but for ease on the HM I am thinking to put in the ponytail to create the bun. That way on the HM all I have to do is tie my hair at night to keep it flat. The bun I can keep in or take it out for the ponytail.

If I do a hair trial it will be in September.

If you are going to do a protective style I say do it about a week out from the wedding to let your hair adjust to it then do your wedding style the day of (of course).
