Blanket to guest ratio?

Mrs. F-u-..., on December 23, 2014 at 10:51 AM Posted in Planning 1 26

The wedding is in 8 days and the forecast has dropped 13 degrees. So, I'm ordering some fleece blankets, probably today. I found some on sale for $2.99 until tomorrow!

We are having 100 guests. How many blankets should I provide?

50"x60". Just the typical cheap fleece blanket/throws.

I would do 1:1 if the temps will be low - that way people can wrap themselves.

Where is the wedding? 13 degree drop can mean different things in different parts of the country. Can you move the ceremony indoors?

then you will probably need 1 for each guests then, it may be awkward trying to share and you want your guest to be comfortable.

It's in the Phoenix area, so instead of 68-69° it changed to 56-57°. So not crazy cold, but definitely cool - at least for the local guests.

Yes, the whole event is outside - typically we have pretty warn winters, just having more cold spells this year than last year.

Ah, you're in Mesa (I'm following a trial there -- the Jodi Arias penalty phase retrial). I thought it was always hot in Mesa!

I think you should do one blanket per person. A few other things to think about (like you need a few other things to think about with your wedding in a week) -- is this a late afternoon into evening event? If so, will it actually begin to feel colder after the sun sets and the reception progresses? Because the entire event is outside, I would think about some kind of portable heating units. If it really does get into the fifties, I'm afraid your guests will leave earlier than you'd like. I'm not trying to panic you. I just want you to have the wedding you've worked long and hard to create.

Oh, and one other thing -- if you're wearing a strapless gown, see if you can find a bolero jacket or white shawl to put around your shoulders at the reception. If you don't need it, great. If you do, you'll be thankful for it.

We aren't all cold at 50 degrees. I wouldn't go 1 per guest. I think 1 per couple is pretty good.

@Emilie I'm in Phoenix too! My venue provides those stand up propane heaters. $30 for a tank of propane and there's like... 10 giant heaters. Maybe you could ask if they have those available? Yes I've been freezing in 50°s lol I'm even originally from Chicago lol

Our reception is ending at 5 PM, before the sun will set at 5:30. So that's a plus. Yeah, the thing I'm worried about is people leaving our already short reception early. The ceremony starts at 2:30, reception is 3-5. I have a pashmina wrap I plan to wear but it's not white/ivory. I might look into a better matching one though. My ladies got one as a gift so they have a coordinating option.

Yep, normally our winters are fairly mild so that's the reason I risked an outdoor wedding on NYE. FH's BM has some tabletop heaters we probably can borrow.

When I booked the property, it sun hit the space so I figure that would help too. I went a month ago for lunch and the sun moved and is now blocked by a large building casting the space into the shadows. Better pictures at least... lol.

You can find an ivory pashmina at Charming Charlie's ( if there is one near you). Instead of blankets (what would you do with them afterwards) I would go with the tall heaters. Some even have a little table so you can use it as a cocktail table. Many people should be looking at the weather and dressing appropriately. If it was evening, then yes I would look into blankets but I think you should be ok

Oh your reception is during the day? Honey I think you're fine. Maybe get 20-30 blankets if it makes you feel better but I think for daytime with the sun out it's going to feel much warmer.

Ooo, thanks! There is one maybe 15 minutes from my house! I'll go after Christmas.

I probably will get 40 blankets so that way people could cover their llegs if they get cold. Any blankets not taken home will be donated to the homeless (our church does a drive year).

I think that you should figure a lot of guys won't use theirs. I know my Husband and Dad would very unlikely use them. So maybe at least 1 per lady guest (as they are likely in a dress) and then some extras for guys that want one?

You might be able to rent gas heaters at the same cost of buying blankets by the way.

You might also want to post something to your guests reminding them to dress warm...wear your tights and bring a wrap or bring your jacket sort of thing. The more you can encourage them to be comfortable the longer they will stay I think. Smiley smile

I am sure the wedding will be and awesome one...I mean it was 36 degrees in MN and we took outside photos for 2 hours and were fine....people can suck it up for almost 60 degree temps...here in MN in the spring that can be shorts weather lol.

I would do one per couple and some for kids if you have them attending. I would also definitely check on some propane heaters too.

Well, I would share one with DH, but if I was going by myself or anyone but him, I would not share.

@Emilie- The temperature dropped 13 degrees here too! It has been 75 and gorgeous all month, but is supposed to be 38 degrees here on NYE (of course going back up to reasonable 2 days later). Where are you finding the blankets if you don't mind me asking?

I'd do 1.5 times the number of guests personally.

    Edited for spelling

As a Chicagoan 50 degrees wouldn't solicit blankets, but I do know in NC where I'd walk around in a sweatshirt on a 35 degree day, my teammates from Florida would be dressed as Eskimo's and basically crying. As someone else said make sure all guests know the wedding is outdoors so they bring a coat, and I would do one blanket per guest and possibly leave tags on/them in bags if they can be returned if not used?
