BM Dress Issue

SoonToBe Mrs. Green, on February 13, 2017 at 2:31 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

I need some ideas and advice. Back in the beginning of October myself and my 4 BM went to order their BM dresses. All of the girls got measured and ordered the suggested sized, except for 1.

One of my BM decided that she was going to lose weight so she order 2 sizes smaller then suggested. She also stated that they always make you go to a bigger and she did not want to pay the extra cost for the dress and alterations. She is shorter so she said the bigger size would be extra long and cost more to alter. I offered to pay the extra cost for the dress and to help with the cost of the alterations because her measurements (her chest specifically) was not anywhere near the size she ordered I was worried.

This weekend we picked up the dresses. There is a bout a 4-5 inch gap in the dress that will not zip! The dress is way to small. My MOH recently lost weight and is willing to swap dresses(amazing), but that dress will still be a size smaller then what she suggested. Con't in comments

The store said the most can be let out is .5 inch on each side. I don't believe that that will be enough to have the dress zip.

I love her and played it cool when we picked the dresses up. Weight is a hard topic and she is my good friend. I don't want to make her feel bad in anyway. I just don't know what to do. The store is final sale and you sign that you are ordering a different size then they recommended. The dresses took four months for the dresses to come in and my wedding is in 3 months now, so we cant even order a new dress.

How can we make this dress work?

Can the dress shop do a rush order? Do they have dresses she could buy off the rack? I realize it may be a different style but if it fits the color scheme would it be that big of a deal to you?

Is it davids? I've had a rush size exchange there before. It came in two weeks.

Is it possible to add fabric? A good seamstress will know how to make it work!

My friend bought a WEDDING dress off the rack and it won't zip up all the way, so stressful! She is having a corset back put in by the alterations woman. If you're ok with 1 of your maids having a slightly different back that could be an option! Good luck!

Because of the back of the dress there isn't away to change it. If she was my MOH I'd be fine with different dress same color. I think it would look strange to have all the girls have the same dress except for her. The color was also special order(not the color in the pic). It was from a small local bridal shop.

Does the top clasp for your BM? If it does and she can zip it up to the top of the skirt I think you can get ribbon the right color and find a talented seamstress to add a corset to just the top part

Can she wear a cardigan or bolero to cover the gap?

Also, I'm not a seamstress by any means...But I imagine they could probably do a small corset for the zipped part and it would still look okay..

I'm hoping the a seamstress will be able add some of the fabric that she cuts from the hem to the sides. I think I am just trying to prepare for worse case scenario, because the shop was adamant that with the style if the dress that adding was not going to work.

On a side note, I think I did good not losing it over anything during a year and a half planning until now. lol

Following. My BM ordered her gown (not a traditional BM gown) two sizes too small and it doesn't zip at all (4-5 inches too small). She has time to lose weight if she wants too but I'm freaking out haha.

I wore a Bill Levkoff dress for my SIL and Brothers wedding - ordered it and i gained some weight before the last fitting. They let out all the seams and it fit perfect. They should be able to help her....i literally had a breakdown when it wouldnt zip

Is she still planning on loosing weight? Hopefully with switching the dress, having it let out and maybe loosing a little weight she should be able to fit into it? If not I would see if a rush order is available and how much it would cost.

MN Bride, she would like to lose weight, however she would need to lose more then a few lbs for her current dress to fit.

I would look into rush shipping and see if she can get one that fits in time. Not your fault - but that's the heavy price tag for ordering too small.

Ugh this sucks! This same thing happened to me when I was a BM in a wedding a couple years ago. I did NOT order a smaller size, the person who measured me did not do it properly, so my dress would not zip whatsoever. I echo pp's who have said a good seamstress will be able to fix it. The back may be tricky but I would not not ask because of it. Hopefully they can do a rush order or something to remedy it! Good luck!

ETA: I found a seamstress who added fabric/let it out, literally everything and it looked exactly like all the other BM's dresses. Granted, it was a full zip and did not have a unique back like yours but it was done.

Find an *excellent* seamstress (and remember, you're not beholden to the salon where you bought the dress). I was in a wedding many years ago, before bridesmaid dresses even came in plus sizes, and the biggest size available didn't fit me. I had a seamstress practically re-make that sucker! I'm super short, and although the snooty salon wanted me to order extra fabric to add gussets on the side, I said no thank you and a) took the dress to an outside seamstress, despite the tutting from the snooty salon ladies; and b) used the foot and a half we had to cut off the bottom to hem the dress. The seamstress had to detach the bodice from the skirt, split the side seams, add the fabric, and put everything back together, but no one noticed a thing. I am sure that an excellent seamstress could do something with your BM's dress (the corset idea is actually quite genius; it just wasn't in vogue back in 1992!). Good luck!! [The irony here is that your BM's going to wind up paying more to have this dress altered than if she had ordered it closer to her size. womp-womp Smiley sad ]
