Bone in Chicken

Kelsey, on August 17, 2016 at 10:54 AM Posted in Planning 0 26

We are having a very rustic elegant wedding next October and have to decide what meats we want with dinner. Being in an Amish town, we're having Thrashers dinner (think traditional Thanksgiving on crack) we get two meat choices of ham, turkey, roast beef, and bone in chicken. The chicken is AMAZING however I'm wondering what people's thoughts are about digging into a drum stick or thigh during a wedding.

I'm wondering what rustic elegant means. Like... fine china in a barn?

Other than some confusing things in your post, bone-in chicken is fine

I wouldn't be a fan of bone in chicken at a wedding but I would probably just go with whatever other meat option you choose.

I would be fine with bone in chicken. I think it usually tastes better.

I love bone in chicken and would totally eat it at a wedding drumstick and all in my dress haha. But I know a lot of people who are weirded out by it and wont touch it. I feel like you can't go wrong with ham and turkey! A lot of nice restaurants serve a roasted half chicken, but that's a little different than a drumstick because people are expected to cut up the roast chicken whereas a drumstick is expected to be eaten with your hands.

I love bone in chicken. When I'm in a T-shirt. I don't even like prime rib at a formal event; it's too hard to navigate when you're trying to be social with a table you may or may not know well.

The drumstick part is what's throwing me. Are people going to be picking it up and gnawing at it? Not very elegant.

Hi Kelsey, welcome to WW! Make sure to upload a picture for your avatar (instead of the default icons) so that we can get to know you and tell you apart from all the other posters.

I think bone-in chicken should be fine? I've had lobster at a wedding which is way messier!

ETA: Chicken thighs would probably be better than a giant drumstick Smiley smile

If it were cooked right I don't think I would mind it, honestly.

But then again, I do love the bone.

I know bone in chicken is supposed to be juicier and tastier but I hate trying to eat around the bones and I feel like for a wedding it would be nicer to have boneless chicken.

Bahahahahaha Bea! That meme, I'm dying.

Yeah, I would not enjoy a chicken with bone in. My social anxiety would already be through the roof, add a drumstick in and I'd be a mess.

No, no bones. I don't want to do surgery on my food, I want to slice neatly, eat small bites -- lather, rinse, repeat.

This might be a "know your crowd" situation. If I went to your wedding, I would be totally fine with bone-in. But if I were at a black tie, fancy schmancy wedding where the servers were in tuxes and I had to wear a floor length gown as part of the dress code, I would probably side-eye bone in chicken.

Bone-in chicken is a pain in the ass. I think turkey and roast beef are good options if you can only choose 2. I don't eat red meat and I think turkey is a good alternative to chicken, especially when ham is the other option.

ETA: I like ham, but I think turkey would be a more popular alternative.

Any entree item, other than bread, that I have to either pick up or hold with my hand is not elegant.

Depends on how its served, on our HM I had one of the best meals at a French restaurant. It was duck a l'orange. Bone in duck leg. Fanciest restaurant I've ever been to and hands down one of the best meals I've ever had.

I'm not pretty princess, bring on the bones. I've had lobster at wedding in Maine before.

FYI- Guys you can cut the chicken off the bones, and if its cooked properly it should just fall off. No need to pick it up and get messy.
