Booking photographer on short notice **update**

Jen, on July 30, 2013 at 10:10 AM Posted in Planning 0 14

First off, I'd like to choke FH.

That out of the way, has anyone booked a photographer with 3 months or less notice? Looks like we have to hold off on booking our photo/video until December at the earliest. I thought we had the deposit all set for today, but it looks like it's gone. I know where it went, and it's partially my fault because I couldn't rein him in. But I'm ready to just ask friends to take pics and videos with their smart phones. Not entirely serious, but I'm almost there.

I didn't book until 2 months beforehand (FH was dragging his feet) but keep in mind the photographer I got was a friend of a friend who owns a small studio so she was very flexible & didn't have a large demand for the month i'm getting married. I'm still asking a few tech-savvy guests to download the Wedpics app anyway cuz it sounds like fun

If you have the person you want picked and know the cost of the deposit (not sure from your post) could you talk to the person and work out a payment plan instead of giving the full deposit right now? As a measure of good faith send X now and then a little more every few weeks so that they hold the date for you? If photography is important to you it might be worth trying to work something out with your first choice. If it's not an important item and you are okay with friends taking photos or a less experienced photographer you can wait but you'll have to go with who's available. Luckily match isn't as busy as the summer months usually.

I think it'll be okay since your wedding is in March-- you may even be able to get a discount from someone just looking to fills days. Did you already have someone you definitely wanted in mind, or are you flexible?

(BTW, our friends booked their photographer on less than three months notice-- their wedding was in December, and they got a really good deal-- and the pictures came out great! and it was a NYC wedding).

@Barbara. I can't spend a penny over $2300 for both photo and video. I doubt I can do this.

Did you already have someone in mind? I spent a lot of time looking for a photographer only under $2K, and the only way to make that work would be to go through a service like The Pros-- if you're okay with something like that, then I don't think it will matter when you book-- they should always have someone available.

It was The Pros. I spoke with our advisor, and she's willing to let us book with $200 deposit. They normally need $450. I think we can do the $200, but I really have to crunch the numbers tonight.

    So nauseous...

I'm about to cry! FH got his paycheck today (direct deposited tomorrow), and somehow there's another $200 in it! He has no idea why. There's our $200 for the photographer!

I've got goosebumps right now. Mom wants me to have good photos I guess.

Things happen in life. Not everything can be planned in advance. Its your day and if a photographer doesnt want to take you last minute, its their lost. I can take a wedding even up to 3 days. I dont normally book for earlier than three months. Anything can change in months.
