Books for Centerpieces- Ideas?

Melissa, on December 9, 2014 at 2:46 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

So I'm doing a literary themed wedding and we're having book centerpieces along with small flowers, like in the below photo. A friend graciously gave me all of the books from her wedding to use. The only issue is all of her books are blue and green, which fit with her colors, and we're doing a sort of monochromatic white and shades of grey (not fifty shades LOL) look. I was thinking maybe I'd either paint the books or cover them a la my sixth grade science book-style with white wrapping paper, if anyone can remember doing that. Has anyone tried something like this and had it work? I'm thinking paint may be the best route as the paper could tear during travel, but just didn't know if anyone else had done it. Thanks!

Hmmm.... I've not done this, but I think you're right that painting might be the better option. Book covers might look a little HS cafeteria LOL.

Yes I like the idea of painting them better. There seems to be a lot of pinterest tutorials out there. Then they could look like these: (I personally love the second one) You could stand the books up outside and use spray paint. I say try one out and see what it looks like when it's painted now and if you like it.

Oooh, I like the second one too. That would be cool to give it sort of a distressed look.

    I did this Smiley smile

Most of my books were in my color scheme (purple and blue) but you really only see the top book anyway. So maybe if you just buy a few books in your color scheme you could make it work! Just something to consider.

First is a mockup and second is at my actual wedding.

Thanks all! Staci, that looks great! It feels sort of sacrilegious to paint them hahaha. I'm definitely going to check out YouTube videos though, thanks FutureMrsPrada!

I know exactly what you mean...I ripped up so many books to make my decor, it was beautiful and yet horrible. Lol.

ETA: FWIW I got most of mine at my library book sale, for $5 a bag Smiley smile I must have looked like a lunatic taking off all the dust jackets to see what color they were on the inside haha.

You might be just as easy to go to a used bookstore or other used book store (or online) and buy books in the colors you like. Staci is spot on...library booksales are the way to go...such good deals.

I got 50 books, and a 26 volume encyclopedia set from half priced books for under $125, I agree that it might be better to look for your own books, my next option would be paint.

Thanks ladies! I'll have to check at my local library. I've gotten books there before to read, but they usually don't do a bag sale and instead they do $2 per hardback. Still cheap and wouldn't be too bad for just 10 tables though.
