Boudoir Shoot. Probably the only one on here not happy with the pics.

RhnCasi419, on September 17, 2015 at 6:27 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 12

Anybody else do a boudoir shoot and not buy ANY pictures? I've got to be the only one, it seems everyone who writes about their experience and end result are elated by the pics. I booked back in February. I booked because I loved her studio space, and I loved her hair and makeup video on her website. Well, in the 6 months I waited for my turn (as I booked far out) the photographer moved. Her new space was so boring. I had wanted a picture by the vanity, it looked so retro on her website. Since she moved there was no more vanity. How hard is it to put a fricken vanity in your new space I wanted to ask her! I HATED the way my hair came out in all the pictures. I felt that her hair and makeup person didn't take the time she should have (which was part of her very expensive price). It was so frizzy at the top of my hair and it showed in the pictures. I told her I could have done a better job styling my own hair, and I swear she took it as an insult. UGH. Out of the cont.

Numerous pictures she shot I ended up loving 1, and just liking 2 others. And of course, she won't let you just buy those, everything is a package deal. At the purchasing session I felt the photographer was very pushy when I told her I had to process the pictures in my mind over night. She made it clear that this one time was the only "purchasing session" ... well, no kidding, I wasn't expecting to come over every day and take my time deciding on which pictures to buy. The experience itself was just eh ... not liberating like I had hoped it would be. Her video on her website looked so much better. Above all, I really disliked her "new" space. Totally disappointed. Want a do-over ... this time I will style my own hair thank you. Hair is really important. In the end, I told her I'm probably not purchasing any of them, mostly because of my hair in the pictures. She was a professional. She showed you how to pose, and I thought I felt stiff in front of the camera, but it turns out she knew what she was doing, because I didn't look "stiff" in any of the poses, that wasn't the issue. I suppose the two main issues were my hair and her studio space which lacked any substance. It was just a really weird experience. Not for everyone I guess.

Sorry you had just a bad experience. Any chance she would let you do a reshoot in a different location? A hotel room maybe? Maybe she would do it free or deeply discounted since you were so unhappy.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience Smiley sad. Thank you for sharing though! I think it couldn't hurt to ask about what TheTinTLC suggested. Worse case scenario she says no, best case, new photos.

So sorry you had a terrible experience. I also agree, ask what your options are as far as doing a re-shoot!

To be honest... I did one a couple of years ago and I wasn't thrilled. Periodically, my photographer does a weekend of all boudoir shoots and I signed up for one. She's an amazing photographer and all the other girls looked so good (the shoots were one after another so there were several of us there at a time). Like you, my hair just did not look good. Her style is to do this messy just woke up hair and it looked spectacular on them... because my hair is shoulder length, I got a fuzzy, frizzy updo. Four digital images were included with the price and even though I wound up getting an extra one (just to get the particular background) there was only one that I thought was excellent and like two others I thought were decent. When I gave them to DH, he loved them - I guess that's what matters. I'd like to do a full private session someday to see if I have a better experience.

Are there any other photographers in your area that do boudoir? Or maybe you could ask if she'd do a do-over for you.

Wow Jess. Sounds like the same experience I had. Interestingly, you mention that there were a lot of shoots, several one after another ... my shoot was on the Friday of Labor Day weekend, and I just felt like they weren't "into it" or had something else on their minds (like the upcoming weekend). I was relying on her creativity, and she didn't offer up much. The photog is an excellent editor. And yesssss, all the other girls looked amazing in like every photo ... me not so much. I really wanted this one product it was a satin photo box with your favorite picture on the front and 12-15 loose pics inside. I just didn't like that many to purchase that product. I won't ask her for a re-do. If she asks me anything in the future, I will be honest and tell her I was disappointed in her new studio and felt that her stylist didn't take the time AT ALL .... honestly, all she did was use a curling iron on me ... I can put curls in my hair with a curling iron for goodness sake. From their website video they show the stylist blowdrying the hair smooth, curling ... nothing like that for me. So disappointed. I would have styled my own hair, haha I did tell her I have "techniques" to smooth down those frizzies and I wish I had known I wouldn't have come to them as a clean slate (just washed hair/not styled - no makeup). The makeup was eh, I could take it or leave it. I'm glad I wasn't the ONLY one.

Yikes. Sounds like your entire wedding planning process has been miserable. Sorry to hear that.

That's really sad to hear. I am a huge proponent of boudoir pictures. I do know that if I had gone to another photographer, I would not have liked it as much and would walk away with your experience.

You know Nicole ... the whole wedding planning process has been a let down for me. Nothing has been turning out like I ever expected. I learned I needed very expensive dental surgery ($7000.00) in the middle of planning this year - the meds I had to use discolored my teeth. Things are looking up though. I'm hoping my boudoir experience was the last let down. I had my last surgery follow up yesterday and was deemed healthy. They cleaned the stainage off my teeth from the medicine I had to use and my teeth look like they did when I was 18 years old! On top of it, my perio specialist gave me a $120 whitening system for free, on the house, for all that I've gone through so close to my wedding (I don't even need the whitening system right now they did such an amazing job clearing off the stainage from the medicinal rinse I had to use during healing time). I've had issues with my bridal party being very uninvolved. I am a very patient and understanding person, but if I put myself in their shoes, I would have done things differently for them. I never complain about it ... but it just put a damper on the whole planning. Overall, the big stuff has fallen into place, my vendors are excellent, FH and I are extremely happy ... but other than that, all the fun stuff has been a huge disappointment on so many levels. Just getting the clean bill of health yesterday meant the world to me ... hopefully the tides will turn in my favor.

I do non traditional boudoir and implied / artistic nude. No fancy studio or furniture. Basic studio or location and no complaints. Many film noir feel shoots in crappy apartments, or even abandoned buildings. I use textures, not so much furnishings to make the shoot. So given any space, a successful shoot can happen! I think too many worry about hair and makeup too much, and it's often overdone and doesn't look like the subject. Clean makeup and simple hair work fine. Many focus too much on location. If the eye goes towards the location more so than the subject, someone's doing something wrong. It sounds like you're hurt about her switching studio, which shouldn't be a deal breaker, but if the feel of the photo would change, she should have communicated that with you. I'd se if she will do them elsewhere for you, but be flexible and not overly critical or negativity will ruin it before it starts.
