Bought a dress, losing weight. What do i do about the fitting?

Amanda, on August 14, 2021 at 5:38 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

So, I didn't use to always be overweight. In my prime, aka my 20s, I was round the 140-155 range. When I started living with my boyfriend at the time, I started gaining weight. Boyfriend after him, I lost some. My boyfriend after HIM, now my fiance, I gained pretty much alllll the weight I lost.

My wedding is in November this year. I started dieting in April and wasn't planning to dress shop until July, but my sister told me to do it sooner just in case the dress takes forever to arrive. So, I went in May. I probably lost about 10 lbs before I went to try on dresses. Anyway, the dress sales rep sized me and I started trying on dresses. When I found the one, I saw that I was a size 16. When I ordered this dress, I ordered a size down to a 14 because I knew I was gonna lose the weight no matter what. The dress was shipped to me and I've kept it in the closet since.

I tried the dress on around the 2nd week of July and it was already loose. I've kept losing weight since then, so I know they're probably going to have to pull it. I've lost about 36 lbs since April and I plan to lose another 20-30 more by November (I have about 2.5 months left to go.)

ANYWAY. The real problem I'm starting to have: I'm not sure when to get fitted for my dress. I have a dress fitting for October 3rd and the wedding is November 7th. I plan to keep losing weight post-fitting. I feel like between October 3rd and November 7th, I can probably lose 10 lbs. I'm not sure if the dress is going to fit how it will during the fitting and I'm worried I'm going to need to get it fitted a 2nd time, but it might be too close to the wedding date. Maybe I should push the fitting date further into October? Maybe I should tell the seamstress that I'm probably going to lose about 10 more lbs? But then what if I don't? Then my dress might not fit. Not sure what to do.

Has anyone else gone through something similar? Being buying a dress, losing a ton of weight, getting the dress resized, then losing more weight by your wedding date?

Your seamstress is going to tell you to try and maintain your weight from the time you have your fitting to the time you get married. At least that's what mine did. I bought my dress and then lost 40lbs so it was super big. She had to take it in 2 dress sizes and advised me to try and maintain my weight unless I wanted to pay for alterations twice.

My suggestion would just to be mindful because they may only be able to take your dress in to a certain size. If I were you I would try to lose it all by your fitting and wait until after the wedding to continue losing. It would be horrible for your dress not to fit and not be able to be taken in anymore so close to your wedding date.
Also, be careful with your fitting being scheduled soo close to your wedding date!

Hi ! I'va had a similar problem... I started a diet but it wasn't succesfull, after 2 months I lost only 2kg, and I couldn't postpone buying a dress anymore... So the measures were taken, and then.. I started loosing weight ! I lost 8 before the first fitting. Then more adter that. 8 cm were taken of, then more... And a month before my wedding I had to pay and take the dress. And I lost more weight... I couldn't find anyone to repair this for me before the wedding ! My mum came from abroad and she managed to sew my dress 1 day before ! That was sooooooooooo stresfull.... So one piece of advice : it's better to maintain the weight from the last fitting !

Hi Amanda! I'd actually advise you to have your first fitting about 2 months out from the wedding!! You'll have at least two or three appointments so you need to make sure they have enough time to alter your gown - especially if they already need to take the dress in significantly!

Here are some great alteration tips to check out:

12 Tips for Wedding Dress Alterations You Should Know About

I also agree with Yasmine and Emilia, in the end it will be best to try to maintain your weight from the final fitting through the wedding because they can't be continuously altering your gown!

I lost 15 pounds before going dress shopping last September and 5 more between finding the dress and my first fitting. My dress had to be taken in ALOT. I had to take my dress in a size and a half. I was confused because I picked up the dress in December and had a try on before taking it and it fit fine but I guess even though the scale wasn’t moving I was still losing inches though I had stopped working out and only cut calories. Alterations cost me more than the dress but I was lucky it was a corset back that could be tightened or loosened depending on what I needed. I would say by your first fitting try to maintain that weight as that is when real alterations will take place that can’t be reversed. Also start getting a ball park idea on the cost of alterations.

Wait until you're 8-12 weeks out from the wedding and don't lose any more weight once you start alterations.

I'll most likely be in a similar situation. My wedding isn't until October 2022 but I'm also in the middle of losing a bunch of weight I gained in my late 20's! A few friends have advised me to go dress shopping ASAP, but I don't want to just yet because I KNOW I'm going to loose more weight within the next 6 months. I'm hoping to be at (or around) my goal weight by my last fitting, so I can just maintain until the wedding.
