Boutonnieres AND pocket squares?

Mrs.Hawks, on May 8, 2016 at 2:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 23

I feel like there was a post on this but I can't find it. I was wondering, if we do pocket squares for the men's suits, would it be weird to do boutonnieres as well? Are boutonnieres the more formal of the two for weddings? Which did you all do? I have no clue about these and all the sites I have been to are full of other terrible ideas so I don't really trust their judgment.

I thought so to. Then I looked up pictures and it looks a little crowded and off to me.

I say do pocket square and skip the boutineers. I never found the point in both of them and have found the pocket squares more formal.

We're doing boutineers we are having native American touches and loved the idea of doing feathers.

We are doing just pocket squares. FH thought floral bouts looked "prom-y" (his words), and didnt like any of the ones I showed him that go with our brooch bouquets and fit the theme. He knew he wanted pocket squares, so we just decided to skip the bouts.

He doesnt know this yet, but I'm going to have the seamstress embellish his pocket square with some of the leftover lace from my dress.

I might skip boutineers and go pocket square depending if the square comes with the suit. Possibly could save a little $

We are doing just pocket squares. The lapel on the jacket the guys are wearing is pretty thin and having both the bout and pocket square looks too busy to me.

I'm thinking we might just skip them and do pocket squares instead. FH says it doesn't matter to him. ETA* thanks for the input PPs

The pocket squares were part of the suit rental package so we did both. I thought it looked great!

Skip the bouts. True story, FHwore a bout as a GM for a friend's wedding. His bout broke before the ceremony started. It just hung there, lopsided and sad looking. Pocket squares all the way!

If we do a bout it would most likely be fake. @ Kelli that looks good together because the square is dark and so is the suit. FH will be wearing a white square with a black suit so I feel like that much of a difference as well as a bout might be too much.

WOW I have never even considered this and was dead set on bouts. I'm meeting with my florist for the first time tomorrow....might just tell her we are skipping them and doing pocket squares!

Thanks Matt! Advice from someone who had to deal with it haha. I think we are just going to do the squares. FH will most likely take his jacket off as soon as he can so no point in doing it just as a prop.

We did both. I assumed we would just have bouts but DH wanted both. It looked totally fine Smiley smile this is the only pic I have right now, but if you just want one or the other go for it! Maybe just the FH a bout?

Boutonnieres are more formal. A pocket square is a replacement for a handkerchief. Handkerchiefs were donned for practical every day use purposes. Compare the use of pocket squares by some people for daily business wear. It would never be considered acceptable to wear a boutonniere as part of professional dress. The boutonniere instead is reserved for formal wear, and usually wear that is more formal than cocktail attire.

As a personal suggestion, I'm typically against doing both. Male fashion is supposed to be function before flash. Just my personal opinion, using both treads upon the trying-too-hard offense. Choosing one over the other adds an air of modern suave.

When I worked tuxedo rentals the bouts were going out then and more pocket squares. I always thought it looked odd to have both and when asked I would say so. A lot of the couples decided on only pocket squares since it would help the budget some and for the most part it did not add much to the tuxedo rental. We even had some do 2-3 colors to change it up.
