Boutonnieres: Do they have to match?

BeeRodMul, on December 2, 2014 at 12:05 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 20

I've read some places that it needs to match with the bouquets. But I want to differentiate FI with his GM, my brother who's the MOH, and our dads. So what do you think?

Groom: cream garden rose

Groomsmen: 2 yellow craspedia balls

My brother (MOH): ivory hydrangea

Dads: yellow rose

We kept everything in the same color family and be a flower included in the bouquets but, I don't think that they have to match. If you want to do something different, go for it.

The do not need to match. We kept everything in the same color group (pink, ivory, purple) and were consistent with the floral selection overall... but DH's was different than the GM which were different than the dads/grandfathers.

(I am just not a "matchy matchy" type of person. It reads very assembly line to me.)

No need to match. My DH had something that matched me (although it wasn't necessary), the best man was different from the groomsmen and the ushers were also different. Our parents had orchids (which no one else did) and they were green while the rest of the flowers were orange, yellow and red. Do what you want- no one can see the vision you have for your day except you! Smiley smile

I think the groom's was supposed to traditionally be a flower from the bride's bouquet, but everyone else can be different.

Ours don't...I don't remember the exact flowers but FH has a completely different one, the groomsmen have another style and the dads/grandpas another. I DIDN'T want them to match

ETA: FH's matches my bouquet, the GMs match BM bouquets, dad/Grandpas match the moms/grandmas corsages

I just wanted to be sure. I just want to make sure my brother is wearing different from the groomsmen by giving him a hydrangea bout since the BMs are carrying hydrangea bouquets.

What you have is perfectly fine, except the hydrangea will die very very quickly. (Unless you're doing silk?) Try white larkspur - it will last longer.

Not at all, but if say make sure they compliment, meaning no clashing colors. Several brides on here have posted non floral ones, I think most recently Gamecock. (Sorry if I'm wrong) my bouquet had so many different flower it wouldn't have mattered but I kept it simple and cheap. My DH had a creamy ivory rose, our groomsmen and our dads had purple roses as did our ushers. Each had a sprig of stephanotis, DH and groomsmen were ivory, the ushers purple, so they were all similar but different. Mix it up however you want. But yes, hydrangea will wilt quickly when not in water, prob not the best bout flower.

We also won't be matching them, I am with you, I like it when everyone can be distinguished from the flowers.

You can do whatever you want. Ours were close, but not perfectly matched (DH had a different accent color in his).

@KTizzle don't worry, we're using silk on the hydrangea bout! Even the craspedia are dry flowers. I'm ordering from this place on Etsy:

    https://www.etsy.com/listing/128135983/wedding-boutonniere-rustic-rose?ref=sr_gallery_20&ga_search_query=hydrangea+boutonniere&ga_page=2&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery

And the flower colors kinda goes with our colors anyway (ivory/cream and yellow)

They do not have to match, its totally your preference. DH will have white and the GM's will have purple.

They don't need to match. My bouquet will most likely have white, blush pink, pops of bright pink, and lots of greens. The groomsmen will have succulent boutonnieres and my fiance will have a succulent with a bright pink flower (his choice). Go with what you both like. I'm convinced that unless you go over-the-top crazy, everything will come together the day of and look "right."

Do whatever you want! I think it's fun! One of my cool brides had bouts with vintage soda caps as part of the design, all different. cool, eh?

It's your decision. I had the men match the ladies not necessarily one another. So for example FH will match me by having a fabric boutonniere to match my fabric and brooch bouquet. The best men will match the maids/matrons of honor's calla lily, rose and stephanotis bouquet with a comparable boutonniere. The groomsmen will have a calla lily boutonniere to match the bridesmaids' all calla lily bouquet. The fathers will match the mothers' corsages with a white rose, and the grandfathers will match the grandmothers with a red rose.

I don't think that they HAVE to match.. but they should probably tie in nicely with your overall theme or color scheme.
