BR: Hypnobirthing: The Dateline report (videos)

Jenni G., on September 3, 2010 at 1:43 AM Posted in Married Life 0 23

although a little old and not the best quality videos... this just made my decision for me for when I'm finally pregnant.. it's amazing to see it in action!!! I'm totally into the idea of trying to do this with as little pressure for "interventions" as possible.. with being overweight I know the doctors tend to push for a cesarean... I'd LOVE to avoid that after watching my sister go through the hell of the staples and etc!

Wow! Very interesting... Hey, worth a shot right?

I'm going to have my babies in a birthing spa. My mom gave birth 3 ways; C-section, epidural in a hospital laying down, and in a birthing spa. She LOVED the birthing spa, so she did that a second time. She said it was so calming and relaxing, and you're spread open SO much wider that the baby just comes out so much better. It was less painful than with the epidural. Also, babies don't breathe until they reach the air, so you can float them under the water for a few moments if you want to. Doctor's aren't all up in your business being intrusive or anything.

I'm thanking you again for this because I just loved seeing the method in action and can't wait for DH to watch it. I just finished the book and we are starting our hypnobirthing classes in october at the urging of our doctor and many midwives I've spoken to who all swear this method is amazing to see in action.

Interesting method of childbirth delivery, I must say. I'm not one to go with the typical run-of-the-mill routine where they put you on a cycle of pitocin and epidurals and have you deliver while laying on your back. I'm not doing hypnobirth but I am going the midwife/doula route come December.

Eh. I can't see the videos you posted cuz I'm on my iPhone, but I typed in hypnobirthing on YouTube and am grossed out. Am I the only one who thinks it's weird to post videos of yourself in labor on the Internet? I don't get it..

@Deirdre: I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that! One of my friends on FB posted a childbirth video taken by some lady doing an unassisted birth at home. Least to say, I was MORTIFIED. I can understand if the video was taken as part of a documentary/film but a self-take video and posted to YouTube? Yeah, that's kinda weird. Smiley amazing

It's interesting... but I'm not sure I'm sold on it. Hypnotism has always made me uncomfortable. Probably because I'm a control freak. The video looks pretty old....I wonder if there is any new research done on this.

Yep jlam, LOTS of new research...all GREAT! no one is hypnotising you (I hate that they even call it that), you are using SELF suggestions to stay calm and pain free so actually you are MORE in conrol than you would be if you were hysterical and screaming..I ama control freak myself so I know what you mean. That's why I fear the numbness of an epidural more than the pain. I have used similar techinques to this in pain management for my endo and it's been great! ...And what do you mean girls about not posting your birth? I was totally going to have a LIVE broadcast feed straight to WW of my crotch-shot cam for my birth...but guess you guys aren't interested afterall so I won't do it....LOL j/k

Hmm... I'm wondering if those techniques would work for the pain I have from ovarian cysts. I'm definitely going to look into it. Thanks for explaining it more Laura. I am uneasy about an epidural for the same reason.

as for the crotch-shot cam... spare us. But we do expect minute by minute posts during labor!! Smiley winking

Oh here's a link that's easier to access both videos

You're welcome Laura, actually reading about Lucky's class got me interested to see if we even had classes up here where I am, which we do.. and she had the link to those videos.. I'm thoroughly impressed because I hate the idea of "dreading" birth.. it should be something beautiful and something to cherish.. not dreaded and scary!

@LovelyUnique: I would just point out that every woman's experience of childbirth is different. I was, unfortunately, way over on the bad side of the experience. Even the ones who tell you that childbirth can be painless usually have a little footnote somewhere saying, "does not apply in cases of cephalopelvic disproportion." Umm... yeah. Baby was 9 lbs., 11 oz. I found out after 22 hours of labor that he just wasn't coming out that way. But there was definitely screaming before that.

This is not to discourage anyone from learning techniques for managing labor, which can be very helpful to many. However, women who have a difficult labor, especially one ending in a c-section, often feel this as a personal failure. It is not. There is simply no technique that will enable every woman to have an unmedicated birth.

Very true 2d bride...that is one of the reasons my doctor steered me away from going with the "Bradley Method" which was my original interest. His opinion is the bradley method can be more militant in making it seem like anything other than total natural child birth is a "failure" on the mother's part. He said he's seen many women too hard on themselves after taking those classes when medical issues came up that were out of their control. The hypnobirthing is more geared towards not panicking even when those medical issues come up, it's supposed to be useful for every situation, even c-sections since that can certainly scare a mother...this technique is supposed to get you through ANY of those situations while still seeing the process as a joyous experience and not so traumatic. It's becoming more and more popular all over the country with moms to be and with medical professionals. I can't wait for the classes, I've already loved the book!

I have two natural childbirth books that I read through and through while I was pregnant. We tried the natural birth without painkillers or anything. I got to 8 cm, and my son got stuck (between my hips).. So what Im trying to say is it is a great experience but dont be disappointed in yourself if any problems pop up. Everyone pregnancy is different and so is every labor.

I gave birth to my son naturally with a series fo different techniques aromatherapy, imagary, rice packs, and walking all through pregnancy and while in labor. Basically what he does. I experienced an excellent birth, I was in pain but it was endurable. I also didn't have everybody and there mama in the room.

I did hypnobirthing when my daughter was born. Its actually pretty amazing. I'm looking forward to trying it again with my next one. I'll be honest, I wasn't quite as relaxed as these ladies when it came time to push, but the rest of the experience was very relaxing.
