Breast Reduction

Shannon C, on April 3, 2010 at 7:52 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 33

My dad is planning to buy my outfit for the wedding. (I'm planning on getting a pantsuit that has a pair of flowy satin with organza overlay pants and a beaded bodice that has a train attached to the bottom so that it still has a wedding dress feel to it, but has the pants that I'll be more comfortable in.)

He keeps asking me if I've found my "dress" yet. Well here's the problem... I'm waiting on my insurance company to tell me if they will cover a breast reduction. Hopefully it will be deemed "medically necessary" and not "cosmetic". Trust me... going from a 40H to anything "human sized" is NOT cosmetic. I personally think I should wait and see if they do before I even bother looking for a seamstress. There's no way I could be fitted for 40H and then have it altered down to a 40D. That's 4 whole cup sizes. It wouldn't look right at all. If they do cover the reduction, I think I should wait until after the surgery to actually go buy anything. What do you guys think?

Since the wedding is still 14 months away, I don't feel the need to rush it so much. We basically have everything else booked except for the limo and my outfit which will have to be custom made since I have yet to find a bridal salon that sells wedding pantsuits that don't look like Mother of the bride outfits.

I definitely think you should wait. I lost weight back in 2005 and went from a 36DD to a 32D, which is basically 7 inches, and NOTHING fit; I had to buy an entire new wardrobe. Going from a 40H to a 40D you'd probably really lose more than that (band size might actually change; it SHOULDN'T, but a lot of bras really aren't sized the way they should be). So yeah, there's just no point to trying to buy anything until after the reduction, if you can get it. Have you mentioned that to your dad?

That's really nice that he's buying your outfit, anyway.

I had a breast reduction Nov 2005, so I know exactly how you feel. You do not want to buy ANYTHING until at least 6-9 weeks after your surgery as you will have a lot of swelling. You will need to purchase several loose bras that clasp in the front to wear because you really will not be able to lift you arms to take your bra off. You won't be able to submerge the area in water until the stitches are taken out (which is a couple of weeks, maybe earlier depending on how fast you heal) so be prepared for showers with your back turned to the front always and sponge baths. If you have a male surgeoun ask for a female assistant so that you can make sure your new breasts are shaped properly (lol my female attendant joked that men just didn't pay enough attention lol). Also the shape of your breasts while the swelling goes down will make them look misshapen, but don't panic. Once all the swelling goes down, they will look normal. Oh and be prepared for some MAJOR pains going through your cont'd

Breasts for several months after the surgery due to the nerve ending adjusting and reawakening. Umm....also there will be scarring around the nipple because they will have to detach it and reattach it, so don't freak out about that. That's all I can think of right now, but if I remember anything I'll let you know!

@Cabell, lol I wish weight loss had helped me. It was my senior year of high school and my surgeon wanted me to lose weight. Well I lost weight in my stomach, but it literally all went into my breasts lol. In 2 months I went from a EE/EEE to a FFF. Shannon, you are older than I was, so you shouldn't have that problem, though.

I also had a reduction a few years back. It took me two years of fighting with the insurance company to get approved before they finally submitted the approval. I went from a

42 HHH to a 40 DD. Much better and most of my clothes still fit, but just baggier up top. I would wait a few more months for the insurance, and if you don't get the ok, move on with the outfit. Good Luck!!

Generally, if you have a lot of medical documentation about problems with your breast size, it helps them to decide it is "medically necessary." I had a lot of documentation, so we didn't have a problem getting mine covered. I went from a FF (mistyped FFF earlier) to a C (now a D). You would think that would mean a huge weight different, but it ended up being either 2.5 lbs lol.

Id wait. your right, they wont be able to tailer anything that much. thats a big difference. but wow! i feel like theres too many girls that have one problem or the other! either too small or too big! i have the opposite... my girls are very small. im hoping when i go on birth control theyll grow a bit. id really like to fill out a B nicely instead of an a being too small and a b being too big!

I hope your insurance covers it, Shannon! I haven't had to deal with anything like that but I've been friends with quite a few people who have and they get so frustrated and have back problems from their chests. I don't know how close you are with your dad to feel comfortable telling him you're waiting to find out about your insurance. We're pretty vocal in my family, LOL, but I've realized not everyone else is like that.

@Devine, all the women in my family went up a cup size or two after having children and they stayed those sizes instead of going back down to their pre-pregnancy breast size. Could happen to you!

I hope your insurance covers it. It is a serious issue if you have back problems. I would wait before buying your pantsuit too.

If you arent comfortable telling your dad about the surgery yet just tell him that since it is 14 months away still you want to wait because you are trying to lose weight and don't want to have to get it altered. Its the truth. But it isn't overly personal. Good luck with the insurance!

Wow I would definitely wait. I considered a breast reduction. FH wants to see if they go down as I lose weight. He is not a fan of surgery. I have a terrible dig mark in my shoulder on the right side from years of bras digging in on that side. If they don't decrease he is SOL whether he likes surgery or not. But good luck on the insurance decision.

I had a breast reduction several years ago and you should DEFINITELY wait. In fact, your breasts can take up to a year to settle into their new shape. Just so you know, if your insurance denies it, you should definitely write a letter of appeal because a lot of insurances will deny people initially regardless of obvious medical necessity. That's what happened with me. They denied me, so I appealed and got approved the day they got my letter.

Nice to know all this info, I am a 32FF and it sucks, I can't wait to get a reduction, but I am going to wait till after kids, our gov't will only cover the reduction, not the lift. So I guess I could start researching what I need to do to have it covered.

I'm a 38d and I'm currently trying to lose weight. I can only imagine how big they will get and after when I have 1 or 2 babies. omg.

No backaches for me--they just feel heavy to me sometimes, like I definitely need to be aware of my posture!

I hope it works out for you!

Well I will be the first not so big (lol) busted bride to comment.. I will pay for half the surgey if I can have what you are getting rid of. LOL!! @JJ, maybe youll shrink after babies.. I did (not that there was too much to start with)

Okay but seriously, i would also think waiting would be the answer. maybe you could look into how long the pantsuit will take to come in (if its like a dress youll need some time) and if your Dad knows about the surgery already maybe just telling him that you have your dress in mind but would like to save him a few *scratch that* Lots of bucks in alterations, but would be happy to let him know when you are ready to go. P.S. Your Dad sounds cute that he is thinking of that stuff!!
