Bridal Party woes

kpdftco, on May 28, 2024 at 1:26 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 2

I am facing a dilemma right now. I decided long ago that I would be have family as a bridal party due to wanting to avoid drama as I've all been in the bridal party for friends I don't even speak to anymore. I am also extremely close to my female cousins and we talk all the time. Add in that we're part of a big Italian family and see each other for holidays all the time.

Right now, I'm getting a lot of flack from a group of my friends over this decision as they believe that they should be the ones to be in the party as they're my close friends. I've tried explaining that I would prefer family and they keep telling me that it doesn't make sense because having family doesn't avoid drama. The people specifically giving me issues are ones that I was a bridesmaid for them, and while we're close, I'd rather have family in this role.

How can I navigate this without damaging my friendships?

Tell them you want them to enjoy themselves without worrying about spending extra money in a new dress, bachelorette party, etc. I didn't ask my friends either and just stuck with siblings, but my friends later told me they were glad to just be guests and not deal with the extra stress of actually being in the wedding.

Once you've told them a reason, and they told you your reason doesn't make sense, my hunch would be your best strategy is to just not discuss your reasons with them anymore.

"I really appreciate how much you want to support me on my wedding day! I can't wait to celebrate with you. Did I tell you about [this fun thing we'll have at the reception?] Can't wait to hop in the photo booth with you! Etc."

"I know, there's always drama! The latest thing, [some drama that has nothing to do with your choice of bridesmaids.] What do you think I should do?"

"Oh geez, I'm up to my eyeballs in wedding decisions, let's talk about anything else! What's going on with [something in your friend's life]?"
