Bridal Portrait Make Up and Hair

Almost a Mrs., on January 1, 2016 at 6:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

Happy New Year!

For those who have taken bridal portraits, what did you do for hair and make up? Did you just do it yourself or did you pay to have it done professionally or have your trial that day?

When my mom got married, she just scheduled her trials the day of her portraits. I thought that this was pretty typical, but now I'm wondering if it is. It seems very risky to me now, what if the trial doesn't work out or we run out of time?

I was hoping you ladies could tell me how you handled it.

I was very lucky... my father - in - law is a really good hobbyist photographer and he did my bridal portraits the week before my wedding and hired a makeup/hair stylist. Funny thing is, I loved her MORE than my pre-booked stylist! I immediately asked her to come on my wedding day (6 days in advance!) and gave my other appointment to my maid of honour.

ANYWAY, enough about me!..... I would absolutely book it the day of your trial. You want to look extra special in your portraits... unless you are very skilled at hair and makeup. You will want more makeup than you normally wear to make your features pop.

When I did my initial hair trial, the stylist took a lot of time with me and changed it 3 or 4 times until I liked it. Once its curled, its not a huge deal to re-pin it, so I think you will probably end up with something you want and like Smiley smile especially if you bring pictures

I did my trial before my bridal portraits and will have my HMUA come and do it again that day.

    Thanks, Kris!

Bridal portraits are pictures the bride takes before her wedding. One is typically displayed at the wedding reception. It's a separate photo shoot from the wedding and I believe a southern tradition. I live in Virginia and every wedding I've been at has had them, so I guess southern is debatable.

I did my own hair and MU for both my bridals and the wedding. It was definitely a great way for me to trial out my hairstyle.

A lot of girls I know schedule their trials on the same day as their portraits, others do a simple hair style they can do themselves for pictures then get a fancy pro do for the wedding.

Is bridal portraits the same as pictures taken before the wedding(same day)?

Where I'm from pictures are done the morning of the wedding then more pictures after the ceremony of both bride and groom.

Bridal portraits are definitely more of a southern thing. Basically, the bride gets dressed in her wedding gown (usually with hair and make-up) and has a series of formal portraits taken of her in her gown. They can be both indoors or outdoors, and often a large portrait will be displayed at the wedding reception from the shoot. These are separate from the portraits done on the wedding day, and are done anywhere from a few months to a week in advance. A lot of MOB's are partial to this kind of shoot.

My new auntie in law is doing my hair. I'm scheduling our trial on my shoot day. I'm doing my own makeup.

@Almost a Mrs. definitely a southern thing. Virginia is in the south. That said, I'm in New England and am considering doing this. I'm originally from the south and have seen this done at many weddings.
